EDIT:
Any help on getting Hal up and xfce to run is greatly appreciated.
Thanks:D
EDIT:
HAL is already running! I forgot it is in my rc.conf file. Sorry. However
[root]#startxfce4
/usr/bin/startxfce4: Starting X server
/usr/bin/startxfce4: line 76: exec: xinit: not found

its your home directory, i would add a user then create ~/.xinitrc then try it

I created a normal user for myself and did the following:
Do this as normal user:
echo "exec startxfce4" >> ~/.xinitrc xinit
startxfce4 still does not work... Keep the ideas rolling in! Thanks.:D

HAL isnt working properly. When I tried to restart, it failed on stopping and starting.

[root]#startxfce4 /usr/bin/startxfce4: Starting X server /usr/bin/startxfce4: line 76: exec: xinit: not found
pacman -Qo $(which xinit)
/usr/bin/xinit is owned by xorg-xinit 1.1.1-1
Do you have that installed?

are you following the arch xfce wiki or the arch beginners guide?
because the beginners guide has you install xorg before a desktop environment

i'm back at the beginners guide. I hope installing xfce4 before x org wont cause any problems. will it??

I am having a similar issue. I had to downgrade to version 0.5.12git20090421.4fc367-2 (last version I had in my cache). Run this as root, and post the output of /tmp/hal.log:
hald --daemon=no 2>&1 | tee /tmp/hal.log
What I get when I run this is:
*** [DIE] hald_runner.c:runner_died():202 : Runner died
Is that what you get?
