apm on Thinkpad

Since acpi doesn't seem to work well on my Thinkpad T23, I've decided to switch to apm.  I've installed apmd, edited the grub menu.lst with acpi=off apm=on.  It suspends successfully, but when I want to wake it up again the system is frozen and shows a muddled desktop.

I read somewhere in these forums that apm isn't compiled in the 2.6.9 kernel, which I'm using; modprobe apm says module not found.  Does this mean I have to compile my own kernel?  And if so, is there a good guide to doing so that someone could recommend?
