USB Image on Flash Partition?

Hi. I tried to find an answer to this via Google but no success:

The USB installation section of the Beginners Guide says, that one should use sdx and not sdx1, and that the command will wipe the whole Flash disk.
Is there no way to put the image on a specific partition of the USB stick? If there's a sdx2 and sdx3, won't they work?
(I am actually even going to install Arch on another partition of the disk.)

Thanks a lot.

Re: USB Image on Flash Partition?

I think you can.  Do you have an image of a partition?  If so, just put it where ever you want on your USB stick, install grub, fix /etc/fstab and remember to rebuild your initrd image after modifying your hooks.  See the install arch linux on a usb key wiki article for more.  I used it to successfully install Arch to my 4 gig USB stick.

Re: USB Image on Flash Partition?

While running Faunos, I was informed that loading the .img file into a mounted partition,i.e. /sda1 was allowed...it has to be mounted with a file system.

The usual method...dd if=(.img) of=/dev/sda does not require a mounted device.

Perhaps this is what you seek...........

Re: USB Image on Flash Partition?

Thanks a lot for the information guys.

Actually i now have realized there's guides to install Arch from an existing Linux (in the link graysky gave), so i won't need any kind of removable media.
But thanks anyway, and i'll keep in mind what you said for another time.
