udev issues with custom kernel 2.6.31

To setup this kernel I just put the source in /usr/src/linux-2.6.31-eeepc and copied the bzImage over.  After that I created some files for making an initrd and ran mkinitrd -k 2.6.31-eeepc -g linux2.6.31-eeepc.  Now the issues is that when I  boot udev fails to initialize, leaving me with nothing in /dev.  It works fine with the stock 2.6.30-ARCH kernel.

This is the udev error:

:: Running Hook [keymap]

Any ideas what would cause this?
