Hardware insert notification (sound or on screen alert)

I wasn't really sure where to post this, but felt newbie corner seemed fitting

Basically, i'm looking for an app/daemon that when a device gets connected and recognised, it either plays a sound, or produces an onscreen alert bubble showing the device name or path eg "4GB Sandisk, /dev/sdc"

I know Gnome and other bloated DEs have features like this, but is there a lightweight version for slim WMs like openbox or similar?
