[SOLVED] pidgin/finch will not start.

Hello-
I have been using pidgin without issues for sometime. I did pacman -Syu after not using my PC for sometime and the next time I booted pidgin would not start. I tried from the command line and received:

pidgin
zsh: illegal hardware instruction pidgin

And when I run:

pidgin -d

I also ran gdb:

I also noticed that when I use kde, xfce or fluxbox are my usual WM, I get a message from Knotify:

I have ARCH installed at work and pidgin runs fine there. I am not seeing any recent bug reports so I believe that this is an issue on my PC here at home.  I've looked through /var/logs/* and not seeing anything that is jumping out at me. I removed the pidgin package as well as doing a pacman -Sc, and reinstalled but I get the same results. Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks!

Re: [SOLVED] pidgin/finch will not start.

I'm only guessing here but I wonder if it was the dbus{-core} upgrade.
Try downgrading those two packages.

Thanks for the suggestion but no  luck.

Downgraded to:

pacman -Qs dbus
local/dbus 1.2.14-1
    Freedesktop.org message bus system
local/dbus-core 1.2.14-1 (base)
    Freedesktop.org message bus system

The same output as above.

Works fine here with latest updates. Just curious whether zsh may have an effect?

I thought that at first too but I doubt it. That is just zsh reporting a returned error in the program it just ran much like bash and every other shell does.

Yes, my apple hardware running ARCH at work is fine as well. It is running the lastest updates.
I did run `bash` and tried to start pidgin, recieved the 'illegal instructions' as well, it was one of the first things I tried as well.  sad Thanks for your replies!

As a side note. I don't have any sound in KDE and I have been running kopete while trying to fix pidgin. I received a message, ICQ, in kopete and then got a knotify error, using xfce right now:

Application: KNotify (knotify4), signal: Illegal instruction
[KCrash Handler]
#6 0xb1f83161 in gavl_video_scale_table_init () from /usr/lib/libgavl.so.1

Could there be a connection? Something in the way pidgin is trying to use the audio?

Re: [SOLVED] pidgin/finch will not start.

same happened with my Arch install - Pidgin now shows "illegal instruction" after start. As I remember the last thing I did before Pidgin stopped working was installing Skype and disabling pulseaudio to make it work.

Re: [SOLVED] pidgin/finch will not start.

So I am not the only one... I had pulse audio install quite a few months ago. It was removed well before this issue happened. I still don't have a resolution so at this point I am looking at a reinstall I guess. I hate to reinstall and find that I have the same issue sad so I am also hesitant to do this. Might jump ship!

same issue here. reported as http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/10392 but seems that pidgin's devs aren't going to fix it, hm..

Re: [SOLVED] pidgin/finch will not start.

I didn't find a solution and decided just to switch to Kopete.

Re: [SOLVED] pidgin/finch will not start.

actually what caused pidgin to behave normally was removing of frei0r-plugins (it is dependant on gavl)

Re: [SOLVED] pidgin/finch will not start.

Thanks jose1711 removing frei0r-plugins, mlt and kdenlive did allow pidgin to start. I see this as a work around for the time being because I do use kdenlive so just removing for a long period of time isn't an option either. Hopefully now there this is found to be a bug and not just my PC somebody will be able to fix things so I can have everything installed as it was before.

Thanks again for everyone that helped out.

@GhostDevil: you're welcome. as this bug seems not to be reproducible for all users and also the arch dev responsible assigned to the bug report (http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/16389) isn't able to reproduce it could you please add more information to the report? i'm going to do this as soon as i'm back from work. thank you, joe

jose1711 I added some further info to the page. I am not sure if any of it is helpful but at least it could be a starting point. I will be happy to provide more information if needed.

i know this isn't the best workaround either but you could just leave kdenlive installed and rename /usr/lib/frei0r-1 to something else (e. g. frei0r-1.backup) and then re-rename it when you'd want to start kdenlive.

Re: [SOLVED] pidgin/finch will not start.

Ok it looks like the lastest update to gavl, upgraded gavl (1.1.1-1 -> 1.1.1-2), sovled my issue. I now have kdenlive, mlt and frei0 plugins installed along side of pidgin. kdenlive and pidign are now working, at least the pidgin starts now! Thanks for everyone's replies and and extra shout out to jose1711 for taking all the extra steps.
