Archlinux on Acer Aspire 3810T

Hi,

is anyone running Archlinux on Acer Aspire 3810T (preferably the version with SU9400 instead of the single core CPU)?!
I would like to hear about your experiences since I'm a bit concerned about the performance when multi-tasking.

I'm also really interested in this, I am thinking of getting the smaller 1810T. I have seen in the Ubuntu forums there might be problems with the hard drive and ethernet drivers. Hope it's ok

Just want to give you a tip, I ditched the Acer and bought a Asus UL30A. Is a really nice computer with (I think) similar performance. Battery life is great, and it plays nicely with Linux. I can recommend it!

Thanks for your advice. But I ordered the Acer machine on monday. I read something about the Asus UL30A having a battery life time of 12 h. Is this the actual range of time you can get out of it? If so I might be a little bit jelous ;-) Why did you decide against the Acer one? The specs seem pretty similiar except for the 3810T having a SU9400 instead of a SU9300. I expect to get my hands on the Aspire next week, I will post some results afterwards.

There is different models. Mine is 10,5 hrs on the paper, I get around 6-8 hours. It's more than enough for me. I chose this becouse I trust Asus much more than Acer. The quality in this machine is fantastic. I love the keyboard and the touchpad, those things really matter for me. Well, this is getting kind of off topic

Just got my Acer AS3810T-354G32n and the first problem I encountered with archlinux-2009.08-core-x86_64 was on the wired interface, which gave some strange errors when connecting a cable and then disappears from system. Fixed that after I updated my system,  installed the latest Atheros driver from Red Hat Bugzilla and blacklisted atl1c module in /etc/rc.conf, as mentioned in this thread.
On the other hand, wireless and usb worked out of the box, but the other features haven't tested yet, must get a WM first. Also default SATA mode (AHCI) worked too.

Hey KlavKalashj, could you give me some specs about your UL30A ? Particularly some lspci -output and lsmod and so on. I'm about to get this baby soon and want to know what works and what doesn't. I heard about the touchpad getting recognized as PS/2-Mouse which leaves you without all the benefits of a synaptic pad f.e.

What kind of wifi card does yours have? Mine (lspci) says:

I finally got the notebook. The wifi card is a

02:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless WiFi Link 5100

as listed by lscpi. It worked out of the box unlike the ethernet controller

03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Attansic Technology Corp. Device 1063 (rev c0)

which had to be fixed as described by addeboy (thank you very much for mentioning this). After the initial kernel update, however, it works with the shipped module (atl1c). What battery time to you guys experience? Using Archlinux I get around 3.25 hours whereas using Windows 7 x64 it easily runs for 6 hours with wifi enabled. I alreadys installed laptop-mode and cpufreq.  Everything else works just fine.

You are right about the touchpad, it's some kind of elantech or so... It works pretty good ootb though, with two-finger-scrolling, taps etc. If you wanna config it, it'll be harder I guess
