Hi!
I've installed Arch on my netbook (EEE 1000HE), and it works great - but however, today, when I booted it up, I could see that in the boot process HAL fails to start. After this, gdm pops up and I can't do anything (since the keyboard & mouse depend on hal).
I've booted into single user mode and checked the logs at /var/log but I don't think I found anything even remotely related - what should I do? Trying to start HAL manually just "fails" too.

if you can, search /var/log/dmesg for any errors, theres a lot of stuff in there so i'd suggest deleting it first, rebooting and then searching it for errors or warnings. If all else fails you could remove and reinstall HAL.

DBUS hasn't been accidentally removed, has it? HAL needs it.
(Some people apparently need to add in dbus before hal in the "Daemons" line of their /etc/rc.conf as well. That isn't necessary for me though - on my machine, hal calls on dbus automatically.)

As the previous poster stated, try different configurations in your rc.conf as stated below:

There was nothing of interest in it after deleting and rebooting. Searches for hal/hardware abstraction layer don't return anything.
dbus is set to run before hal - I also tried the other way around. Still no luck.

Only to be sure -- you did not background hal nor dbus in the DAEMONS array?
And hal is started as early as possible?
Putting dbus after hat makes no sense, btw.
My DAEMONS array:
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng hal !network !netfs @fcron @atd @gpm @cups @sensors @alsa @pulseaudio)
To know or not to know ...
... the questions remain forever.

Yes, I didn't.

Yes.

Then you should probably take that out from the wiki.

Ironically, your post will not help his case at all, while installing XP would solve all of his problems.
Anyway, Veeti, did you try the suggestion of reinstalling HAL?

There is no irony here.

Alright , this is probably a stupid idea . (I have no bash skills)
Can you add debugging echo statements after every step(if statement) in the "start" case in "/etc/rc.d/hal" ?
something like :
echo "the 1st if statement returned $?"
and so on for each if statement .

HAL started working - I reinstalled network-manager. I'm not sure if this fixed the issue, but it seems to be the case.
Now to figure out why Compiz makes the computer completely unresponsive and why windows are stuck in the top left corner...

Make sure you've got all the relevant stuff like Move Window, Resize Window etc. enabled in CCSM. I know it sounds obvious but it's a common error.
