when I open XMMS, the old gray icon appears in the task tray, eventhough I changed the system icons in /usr/share/icewm/icons so that the XMMS icon is blue, not gray.
However, when I downloaded amsn, the amsn icon automatically appears in the taskbar. It seems to me that icons are attached to applications somehow.
How dows this work? I would like to attach icons to applications so that when they appear in the taskbar, the icon appears next to the application. I'm tired of seeing the red X icon all the time.

copy "winoptions" from /usr/share/icewm to ~/.icewm and add your custom entries there. It's pretty self-explanatory, I think. I'm not much of an icewm user though, so I can't comment much. Tell me if you have any luck.
