Quadro FX 2700 M doesn't display 1680x1050 as on option

I'm running x86_64 on my laptop using the opensource nvidia driver and xfce4.  The native resolution is 1920 but I'd like to drop it down to 1680 or 1440.  xfce-display-settings only has 1920x1200 as a selectable resolution...  I haven't modified the xorg.conf at all and am unable to select other resolutions.  Must I add modlines to the xorg.conf to achieve this?

Hrm, open source nvidia driver == nouveau?  If that's the case, then the DRM module only recently gained support for more than one mode for LVDS connectors (laptop screens).  Try to update nouveau-drm, if you can (the nouveau-drm in testing, along with the kernel from testing, will give you KMS too.  I don't think you can change display modes with nouveau without KMS.

@tav - It's the nv driver.  None of the official nvidia drivers work with this system for some maddening reason!

Yeah, I hate the nVidia drivers too.  I'm not sure about what kind of modesetting support the nv driver has.  Try running `xrandr' and seeing if it lists any other mode choices.  If not, it's still possible that you can change the resolution by modifying your xorg.conf, but I don't know.

Anyway, I'd recommend the nouveau driver, as recent versions for sure have more than one mode.  And KMS is awesome.

Re: Quadro FX 2700 M doesn't display 1680x1050 as on option

I actually got the nvidia-173xx drivers as well as the latest 185.xx driver to work.  I'm using the latest ones now (package name is nvidia) but I can't select 1680x1050 (it's not in the list) from the nvidia-settings.  It drops from 1920x1200 to 1400x1050!  This is a Quadro FX 2700 M and it has 1680x1050 under windows..?

$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 240, current 1920 x 1200, maximum 1920 x 1200
default connected 1920x1200+0+0 0mm x 0mm
   1920x1200 50.0*
   1400x1050 51.0
   1280x1024 52.0
   1280x960 53.0
   1024x768 54.0
   800x600 55.0 56.0
   700x525 57.0
   640x512 58.0
   640x480 59.0 60.0
   512x384 61.0
   400x300 62.0
   320x240 63.0

WTF?
