Aren't you the only judge of that? How can we benchmark your box for you?

Hmmm faster is such an ambiguous word in this case.
example:
Ubuntu is probably faster to get everything working properly
Arch is probably faster once everything is working properly
.... It really comes down to how and what you use the OS for and what you want out of it.
Here's my general answer. Arch will probably be faster (in terms of most benchmarks) in most cases with most machines than ubuntu. Mostly because Arch comes as a smaller image with bare bones software compared to ubuntu. IE you will not have gtk and qt installed by default. On top of this Arch is rolling release with a slant toward newer software, so it's likely that the performance increases will be implemented in arch repository before ubuntu. This comes with the side effect that every now and again you may have to revert because the new software may be buggy.

install virtual box and run arch in a VM you wont see the performance boost but at least you can get a hang of the arch way without nuking anything

Major driving force away from Ubuntu for me was the rate at which Arch packages get updated and the rolling release model. If you crave having 'current' versions of software, including the kernel, Arch is for you. 2nd was the Arch Way (search the wiki) which really appeals to me.

I switched about 2 weeks ago mainily because too many things were not quite right in Ubuntu. Specifically, firefox would never close. Always got the Force Quit message. Firefox would take, sometimes, up to 5 minutes to load causing the disk to churn, much like Windows 95. Most of the default imaging software is cumbersome and slow. Since using Arch, I've discovered mirage and feh which are perfect for my needs.
I've come to appreciate the power and ease of pacman.
Arch comes up considerably faster. As I use xfce4, the DE is up in under 10 seconds. However, since using Arch, I don't clutter my desktop with rarely used programs so I'm running very lean and mean.
Bottom line: everything works as expected in Arch. No bloat, no updates that include 95% of what I don't want. But...the Ubuntu forums can't be beat by any forum on the planet.

I agree with most of what you said, but I dunno about forum line... the arch forums have been very good to me. Quiet a few knowledgeable users with good attitudes towards newbs in here...

arch uses optimized packages, it may be faster that way.
you can also install the packages from source and get better optimization results (using abs+makepkg or an AUR helper - the wiki have everything u need) , therefore getting the arch even more fast.
edit:
imo the major differences between arch forums and ubuntu forums is that as arch has less users than ubuntu, it has probably more competent users because of the kind of distro (minimalist, based on KISS philosophy)
btw, im actually running a 5-year old cpu (an oldy pentium-m) with the latest kde4.3 and getting less than 1 second to open the browser (chromium or opera) with composite and all that eyecandy
and hey:
arch has a great WIKI and youll have many things to learn from the wiki (if you have a doubt check the forums )

If people do not believe that mathematics is simple, it is only because they do not realize how complicated life is.

It is true that you get and answer faster on the Ubuntu forums, but that's just because they have WAY more users.
Now here's my "But..."
But...the majority of answers you get on the Archlinux forums are actual problem fixing answers, they have a great attitude no matter how newbish you sound, while on the Ubuntu forums I often got sent to install some other app that does what I wanted instead of receiving fixing advice and so on. Not bashing them here, sometimes they come through just fine, but other times...

As much as I like Arch, I think firefox can crap out on you on every distro.

Arch Forum != Ubuntu forum.
You can't expect the mods and users google and look up links for you.

Yeah I have to agree here, I have had lots of firefox-related problems in both ubuntu and now Arch, my solution = chromium from AUR. Works like an absolute charm

Let's call that a different mindset, shall we .
