Is it possible to upgrade a specific package with pacman?

Anyone but me find the man-page for pacman utterly confusing btw.?

Re: partial upgrade

It is possible...  but that will break your system sooner or later.   You are always best to update your entire system unless you really know that upgrading a single package is safe.

Re: partial upgrade

Aha, well the story is that I found firefox failed to display Japanese and wanted to read Jap pages today but a full system upgrade would be pretty large so I thought I'd rather postpone thee rest to this night.

I don't know very well how the packages work but conceptually it seems like a simple thing to upgrade a specific package alone (along with its dependencies of course)...

Re: partial upgrade

But that packages deps may be another packages dep too so upgrading them can break other packages.  In recent times this screwed people over with the readline rebuild (non booting systems), the libjpeg rebuild (non working desktop environments), ...

These are the joys of rolling release.

Re: partial upgrade

So just keep updating along dependencies both ways until it stops? Ah well, I won't bitch more. Thanks for the comments. A "pacman -S firefox" did what I wanted for now and I'll do a full upgrade later though in my experience that is more likely to break something (that I had finally gotten the way I liked).

If you would like to suggest changes to pacman's man page, you can submit them as a feature request in the bugtracker.

Re: partial upgrade

It's just you. Pacman's manpage is pretty clear actually - you have the uppercase options, and every uppercase options has specific lowercase options tied to it, as stated by the manpage. What's so difficult about that?

For starters that that is not explained. However, this is not the place, I think. Cheers.
