New script for checkgmail 401 Unauthorized Issues

I am sure that I am not the only one who has experienced a glitch with checkgmail over the last few days. It kept popping up a box asking me to verify my user/password info and then would fail to connect. I went to the project home page http://checkgmail.sourceforge.net/ where this bit of info is posted:

Recent 401 Unauthorised Issues

The bad news first: if you're getting this error after restarting checkgmail, you seem to have encountered an IP-address-specific login issue, courtesy of everyone's best friend Mr. Google. I'm not sure why this is happening, and I don't know how to beat it yet. You can follow developments on the forum thread here.

The good news is that if you're on a standard ADSL account with a dynamic IP address, you should be able to get checkgmail working again by power-cycling your modem (thus resetting the DSL connection and obtaining a new IP address).

I followed the link in the announcement and read through the thread. The author posted a link to a new checkgmail script. I downloaded it and gave it a try. It worked fine for me without the authorization error. I replaced my /usr/bin/checkgmail file with the new one and have not had any issues. I thought I'd share this info in case anyone else has been experiencing the same connection problems.

Here is the forum thread: http://sourceforge.net/projects/checkgm … 947/index/

Here is a direct link to the new script: http://checkgmail.svn.sourceforge.net/v … evision=40

Re: New script for checkgmail 401 Unauthorized Issues

I know I'm nitpicking, but it's not a binary... It's a Perl script.

When I saw your topic my first question was 'why a binary, this is a Linux application, unless it's closed source there's no need to provide a binary instead of source code'.

Just my two cents... I'd change the topic title wink.

Re: New script for checkgmail 401 Unauthorized Issues

I'll flip the OP around with a "good news/bad news" followup.  The good news is, the new script fixes the checkgmail problem (thanks 1024K, Rumor!)  The bad news is, now when I click on the toolbar icon to load my mailbox, I'm stopped at the login page and I have to retype my password *every stinkin' time*.  It no longer even offers me the option of remembering me (presumably by way of cookies).

Has this happened to anyone else?  And if so, were you able to solve it?

Re: New script for checkgmail 401 Unauthorized Issues

2 months later finally found something....If anyone is still searching for a workaround for the hosted domains issue, running checkgmail with the -no_cookies option fixed it for me.

Happy new year...
