WARNING: AMULE CORRUPTED MY HD.. or maybe kernel 2.6.8.1 did

Suddenly my hd became readonly. I was working as usual in my computer and without restarting or stoping anything the hd got corrupted. I could not start the system again.
When checking the hd booting with a bootable cd the error was that two amule part files where partially writen in the same place of the hd. I could delete the files, but now there are a lot of missing system files.

What keeps me in doubt is this: Did really amule broke my system? Isn't it the kernel what is responsable of writing to the hd? So can't it be that kernel 2.6.8.1 is buggy?

Well the latest kernel is 2.6.9 .
I doubt it was the amule package that did it, since it is the kernel that does the actual writing. It is also possible that your disk was corrupted previously and It didn't show up until now.

of course the latest kernel is 2.6.9, but 2.6.8.1 was supposed to be stable, isn't it?

Re: WARNING: AMULE CORRUPTED MY HD.. or maybe kernel 2.6.8.1 did

Indeed it was supposed to be stable, and it really was too.
When harddisks get corrupted, imho, it is very difficult to place the blame because there are so many factors involved. I mean, yes, it is possible, however unlikely, that the kernel fudged it up. But then it is also possible that your harddrive is just getting old and corrupted all by its very self. Maybe you forced your computer down one too many times and the disk was physically damaged. Maybe, also unlikely, the filesystem was messed up when it was created.  Those are just a few, all of them unlikely, but the point is that there are just so many ways this could have happened, it is difficult to start pointing fingers at a particular kernel, or some other potential source, unless some further investigation into how it got corrupted is done.

Re: WARNING: AMULE CORRUPTED MY HD.. or maybe kernel 2.6.8.1 did

then can I exclude amule as the cause of the problem?

I believe so, since amule should have nothing to do with direct i/o or harddisk.

which filesystem are you using?

Re: WARNING: AMULE CORRUPTED MY HD.. or maybe kernel 2.6.8.1 did

I would first look in the logfiles for some hint, then check most of the hardware to make sure it isn't a hardware problem (memtest and fsck -c/badblocks mainly), and if that didn't work then I'd blame the kernel and upgrade to a newer version.

Re: WARNING: AMULE CORRUPTED MY HD.. or maybe kernel 2.6.8.1 did

did you check the hardisk using S.M.A.R.T

smart will report if there are error's with the disk..

also helps to get smart output to get it replaced.

Re: WARNING: AMULE CORRUPTED MY HD.. or maybe kernel 2.6.8.1 did

how can i check my hard drive using smart?

I'm not looking for it because now I'm working in creating the PKGBUILDs and the propper patches of some music creation applications. By now i've done liblo, dssi, xsynth-dssi, fluidsynth, qsynth and rosegarden with dssi support.

So if you help me while I'm contributing to arch I'll be really grateful  lol
