My system freezes with kernel 2.6.31

Hi all,

After upgrading my system to use the new kernel it freezes all the time, minutes after I log in to the system. The only thing I have noticed is that it only happens when the X server is on and running. When I was debugging the problem (and downgrading the kernel, btw) from the terminal it never crashed.

My laptop is an Asus X59SL: Core2Duo T5800, 3GB RAM, Radeon HD3470 and wifi chipset ath9k.

I have tried using all the ATI drivers out there: fglrx (which are the ones giving the best performance by far), xf86-video-ati, xf86-video-ati-git (from AUR) and xf86-video-radeonhd. Unfortunately, none of them made a difference. Downgrading to kernel version 2.6.30 did, but I don't think holding the kernel package forever is an acceptable solution for me, bleeding edge is one of the reasons I use Arch smile

I had a look in the X server logs and couldn't find anything remarkable. /var/log/messages.log was not helpful either.

Any ideas? Is there any other log file I should check?

Thanks in advance.

Sigh, this has come up in a lot of other threads all started in the last few days. Please search first before asking.

Re: My system freezes with kernel 2.6.31

I did search before posting, as I always do, and I haven't been able to find anyone having this same problem. Would you be kind to point me where to look at?

Thanks in advance

Re: My system freezes with kernel 2.6.31

I had the same problem. after the update from kernel 2.6.30 to 2.6.31 my system either froze or behaved very stange. At some point during the boot process I read that the kernel got messed up because of some null-pointer errors due to the open source radeon driver. I'm using a rather old driver (xf86-video-ati-6.10.0) because I need support for my radeon 9250.

I fixed the problem by reverting to the old kernel, everything works fine with the 2.6.30 kernel.

Re: My system freezes with kernel 2.6.31

Same problem here.
Everything was going fine until 2.6.31.? don't remember last number xP (4 for sure. but i don't remember if i tried 2.6.31.3 or if the previous one was 2.6.30).
Kernel issue for sure as it works perfectly with 2.6.30 and with kernel26-lts.
Magic keys doesn't work during the freeze

Hardware : laptop asus X59SR (with radeon graphic card).
I thought a moment kms radeon was the cause but nomodset, modset=0, whatever solution doesn't seem to help.
Luckily, a crash happened when I was on the tty1 and some piece of information appears.
A little bit annoying to write it all but if it may help ...

HARDWARE ERROR
CPU 1: Machine Check Exception: 5 Bank 5: b200121020000400

Then another one like above and then:

Some CPUs didn't answer in synchronization
This is not a software problem!
Run through mcelog --ascii to decode and contact your hardware vendor
Machine check: Processor context corrupt

Fid: 0,comm: swapper Tainted: G M 2.6.31-ARCH #1
Call Trace:
Many adresses
Rebooting in 30 seconds.._

Even if its written, the pc doesn't reboot, the underscore "_" doesn't even blink.
It makes me scared when I saw "its not a software problem" but i do think it is !! for the reason given at the beginning of the post.
Well this problem doesn't bother me as the kernel26-lts is quite enough for me but as things don't seem to involve with 2.6.31.5 and as i think (hope) I am not the only one concerned, I'll try to help debugging if I can.

Sorry for my english.
Regards.
Samuelion.

Re: My system freezes with kernel 2.6.31

you need to recompile the catalyst drivers with the coomented line that says something about "kernel 2.31 uncomment this line" uncommented

Re: My system freezes with kernel 2.6.31

Well, as soon as I saw you post, I thought our computer were quite the same (however I believed that there was really an ASUS X59SL) and surely that our problem was the same (didn't open a new post for this reason).
And as this topic is not very famous, I thought it could be the good reason for me to create an account, practice a little bit my English and add some of my comments.

As I said, I thought the problem was linked to the ati driver (kms and all) but the message which appear in the console makes me think it's more a kernel issue (I believe that for an ati problem, I should still have the control of pc at least with magic keys). Googling some of the kernel outputs, I ended on a mailing list about kernel 2.6.31

http://linux.derkeiler.com/Mailing-List … 11609.html
This link seems to be about a patch on mce.c and concerning exactly the kernel output I had. Don't manage to understand correctly but it seems to be related to the 2.6.31.

I was thinking to wait a little bit, at least a new kernel, to see how thinks involve but opening a bug may be another solution. I am not very acknowledged of how a kernel works, but I should be able to give the information we ask me smile.

Hope.
Regards,
Samuelion.

Re: My system freezes with kernel 2.6.31

You know what, it actually is X59SL, I just got confused smile

Anyway, I think that is the best approach possible. Let's try a further release and see if that "magically" fixes it. I had to do the same on another Asus laptop and, apart from being outdated for some weeks, was not a big deal.

Cheers
