The problem is I can't get to login scree because it automatically logs me into xfce, even if I log out it logs me right back in.

I noticed this new behaviour too, i solved it by changing to timed automatic login instead.
New gdm seem to be a rather big step backwards from a usability view point.
After i tried gnome 2.28 for a few days I am back to slim/xfce again.

So How did you change it to timed login?

Re: autologin and gdm[SOLVED]

maybe you can set :

AutomaticLoginEnable=false

in the daemon section of your /etc/gdm/custom.conf file

So How did you change it to timed login?

/etc/gdm/custom.conf

[daemon]
TimedLoginEnable=true
TimedLogin=<user>
TimedLoginDelay=4
# AutomaticLogin=<user>
# AutomaticLoginEnable=true
