mpd port 6600 already in use.

Hi, guys.

Just trying to set-up mpd for the first time and am getting:

listen: Failed to listen on *:6600: Address already in use
Aborted

when I run:

mpd --create-db

I think the only other app I have running that uses sound, is Skype.

Anyone come across this problem, before?

Try using lsof to find out what is currently bound to that port:

(As root)
lsof -i :6600

im not sure your exact problem b/c i use mpd-git and dunno at what level the repo's version is at, but...

the new mpd changes a few things. --create-db is going away. in -git it's no longer an option as you are supposed to simply use your client to update the db and a new one will be created at start if necessary. eventually inotify is going to be used to see and react to changes to your music folder automagically.

at some point recently it was switched so that mpd --create-db not only created the db but also tried to start mpd, so starting mpd and then trying to --create-db would give you that error as it's already started.

therefore, you should try:

mpd --kill
killall mpd    # just to be safe
mpd --create-db

and see how that goes...

Thanks for the replies, guys. I now get:

-bash: lsof: command not found

and

Found db_file setting without music_directory - disabling database

These prompted me to remove the # that i'd stupidly missed on

music_directory         "/home/chris/Music"

The errors are getting more meaningful with:

mpd --create-db
failed to stat music directory "/home/chris/Music": Permission denied

I'll check the wiki for more clues.

Well, I've install Ario as a front-end, but don't get any of my music showing, but I don't appear to get errors, either. I have uncommented the zeroconf bit in mpd.conf after searching for my mpd server in Preferences. This didn't seem to change anything.

verify that mpd is running then issue 'mpd update' to update your DB, then simply cat the db file itself to see if your music has been added.

I did

mpd --create-db

and then:

cat /var/lib/mpd/db

Gave:

sorry, i typoed.... you should try not using --create-db, instead simply start mpd... then issue mpc update. see if that updates your db file.

barring permission issues... your config looks fine (and i doubt you need the zeroconf thing).
