Saving Batterylife on a Laptop

First off I found what packages would you recommend getting to help conserve battery life on a laptop. I found an article (http://binarytendencies.com/arch-linux- … anagement/) and was wondering if all these packages are necessary. Also, I was thinking about giving KDE a try and found that it has built in powersaving options. How well do these work?

A short list to help you get started:

* Dim your screen all the way down
* Underclock your processor with cpufreq (If you can)
* Turn off internal bluetooth, wifi, etc... if you aren't using it
* Avoid hard drive intensive processes (unless you have an SSD)
* Don't watch videos and play games

A few of those may be common sense, but they're worth listing. I don't advocate changing the frequency of hard drive spin downs, but that's just how I am. Keep researching and good luck!

You could take a look at the power management in the wiki too:

It's not very many packages, you only really need to _configure_ one of them, laptop-mode-tools - the others are deps or add features to laptop-mode-tools. It is the swiss army knife of power saving, covers practically everything.
