Hi.
I was using Ubuntu, but was looking for a change and to make som progress on my unix "skills".
So a friend of mine recomended archlinux as a very stable and simple OS. I do like stability and simplicity alot, so I decided to give it a try, knowking this was a hard task for someone lacking unix skills.
I downloaded a archlinux image and used 'dd' to make it bootable on my 8gb usb flash-drive.
Everything worked out nice, so far..
I formated my hd with the automatic partitioner, wich created 3 partition. Fait enough.. My home is partitioned as a ext3.
Installed worked out fine, and I selected the packages I needed and continued. When I selected with part. grub was going to be placed I just selected /sda1.
I followed to the next step and rebooted. Now I got a hard time login in. It just stands in 'ty1' [root@myhost ~]# login
The thing is.. I didnt write in login name, nor password. Didnt even set root password.
So, my question is: Does a raw archlinux install have NO graphical opertunities? Must I download Gnome or KDE myself? Findig this rather hard as network connected checked as 'FAIL' during login. This may be due to the wireless switch on my laptop, wich deactivates every time i reboot (almost).
Yes I'v selected Archlinux to boot at 'select OS screen'
It will be a major fallback to switch back to ubuntu without even seening nothing but plain black & white text.
Hope you guys can help me :)

You are correct xorg and desktop environments are not installed. You need to use pacman to install xorg and choose a desktop if that's what you want.
The steps are here:

Now I see that I got to login as root, with no password. But this leaves me at same point. Just plain black & white text. Am I doing something wrong?
Thank you alot sir! I apreciate the help, even if my questions are silly as hell

The basic Arch installation consists of nothing more than a bare Linux system (that what you call black & white text). Everything else has to be added by yourself. There is nothing wrong with it, this is the Arch Way. I suggest you read through the Beginners' Guide

On the iso I have it's necessary to scroll down at the 'configure system' menu to get to the root password option, but you can just set a password with passwd root.

Managed to log in as root and created a pw. But I got no internet connection at all..
My laptop is currently using wire wich I'm sure works.. Well, It sure did last time i tried :S
/etc/hosts Looked fine to me. Right hostname, and I also got a ip: 127.0.0.1
Also looked over my rc.conf (/etc/rc.conf) and looked trough the network section. This is my output:
HOSTNAME="arch"
#eth0="eth0 192.168.0.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.0.255"
eth0="dhcp"
INTERFACES=(eth0)
gateway="default gw 192.168.0.1"
Realy need my connection up and running, cos I got no spare computer at home to do the googling with. And I guessing Im going to live there the next monts Can u help me?
ROUTES=(!gateway)
Doesn't that one seem to be ok as well? Checked that my network card actually is eth0, it is.

Try this
# dhcpcd
Then
# ping -c 3 www.google.com

hmmmmf.. Didnt work
$dhcpcd
...forking to background
$ping www.google.com
unknown host.
$ifconfig

This meaning the driver is ok?

Got no DNS in resolv.conf tho, can this be the problem? No idea what my DNS is supposed to be tho; how do I check?

Looking at your rc.conf it's probably you router, so:
nameserver 192.168.0.1
Edit: can you ping your router?

And where should I place this?
hehe, im a fresh linux user.
How do I ping my router? Just ping and the routers adress?
If so, and the adress is the same as I connect to it with: Network is unreachable

It would go in /etc/resolv.conf.

Now it's there. Still no connection tho..
Could it be that the ethernet adapter on my laptop is broken? How do I check this?

You seem to have more than one post going for this, which will only confuse matters:

Another one for the cleaver heads out there:
As I found out that I had no chance at getting the wire to work, due to broken contact I'm going to give wless a try.
When I use iwconfig the results are not so satisfying: no wireless extensions
This is my card: 802.11g 2200BG man:8086 dev:4220 mini-PCI IPW2200 ipw2200 . The internet page tells me that my card works well with linux, on ipw2200 drivers. Why the heck aren't arch telling me this? I'v installed all the packaged containing wireless etc on the package installer! Overkill..
What else need to be done to get my wless up? Do I need another kernel or drivers for my ethernet card?
Seems like I need some extra firmwire, aquired with the command #pacman -S ipw2200-fw
How am I supposed to install this without inet connection?

The firmware should be on the install CD.
Or download it of your nearest mirror onto a flash drive and install from there.
