no stereo

If I play a movie/audio from file I have stereo.   If I play from an optical drive I have left speaker only (the intro plays in stereo but goes to left speaker when the main thing starts.

I have a Debian stable install where everything works.

A Sidux install behaves the same as Arch.

In Arch boot there is a greyed out error message about unknown sound hardware (perhaps someone can tell me where to find this?)

My hardware is run of the mill.
