How to DIY shutdown screen?

Hello all, I'm a ArchLinux bird user :-p
last night, I just installed Arch but have 2 problems.

1st. I want a cool shutdown screen badly, maybe because I was a Ubuntu user.
Now, I use GDM and added "gdm" in DEAMONS, rc.conf. But when I Shutdown, it just appear Login-like screen. That's too common!
Can I modify it? At least make it output information just like that when booting.

2nd, It's a very serious problem!! I installed gnome-network-manager, but it never worked.
Just followed the guide, I edit rc.conf: INTERFACE(!eth0) & DEAMONS(... !network hal networkmanager ...). But :-(
ps. I use static IP.
ps2. It works well when I don't use networkmanager.

if you use a static ip then define it in rc.conf following the wiki (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Con … _Static_IP) and do not disable eth0 (the !eth0 should be eth0)

for the shutdown/bootscreen stuff you can for example use splashy

And I know it seems to be the unsolved issue of Gnome 2.28.

Never tried splashy. Does it simply display a graphic and all the info about which daemons are loading, or just a graphic/progress bar?
