Thinkpad T42p volume and mute buttons don't change ALSA

Hey guys,

The volume buttons on my T42p work just fine. I can adjust the volume up/down and can mute. However, when I do it the ALSA settings are not adjusted. Is there a way to change this so that rather than adjusting the 'hardware' settings the ALSA settings are changed?
