I installed Arch on my old box. Xfce won't display 1024x768.
I set GRUB with vga=773 and the console displays in 1024x768, but when I startxfce4 the GUI is in 640x480. I'm tired as hell, so I'll try out suggestions in the morning. Thanks for any help in advance!
EDIT: BTW, I tried setting xorg.conf already and it didn't work.

Have you tried changing the display settings in xfce4 settings manager

Yeah, that's the first thing I tried. No option for anything other than 640x480.

Try xrandr. xrandr --query list the available resolutions, xrandr --size <123x456> sets the resolution.
If 1024x768 isn't listed, you may need to edit xorg.conf. You said you already tried that: what exactly did you do?
Good ideas do not need lots of lies told about them in order to gain public acceptance.

Just my luck: I reinstalled entirely because originally I installed xfce4 before xorg by accident and thought that might be the problem, but now I can't even start X "fatal server error" "caught signal 11." I'm going to reinstall one last time see if I can get back to where I was, lol. Sigh.

Alright, working, dbus wasn't installed for some reason. Resolution problem persists though. I'm going to try and edit the xorg.conf again. The ArchWiki article on it is confusing (i.e. I don't know where to put Modes etc. exactly) can anyone point me to an example?

Don't reinstall. If you can boot and login, your system is up and running. If, for example, xorg doesn't get the correct information about supported resolutions from your monitor, all you need to do is add some lines to xorg.conf. Reinstallation of the whole system is just a waste of your time.

What video card do you have? Did you install the appropriate driver?

And do you have xf86-video-intel and intel-dri installed?

Thanks boss, that did the trick. I totally forgot about those packages...
Linux always makes me feel like a dumbass because it's always my fault. Only advantage to Windows is blaming it instead of yourself! LOL

No problem. And don't be too hard on yourself. Just mark the thread as [SOLVED].
