maemo 5 sdk install/usage

Hello,

I tried to install the n900 maemo sdk following the instruction from http://wiki.maemo.org/Documentation/Mae … stallation, basically:

* I downloaded an ran the two .sh scripts:

sudo setarch i386 ./maemo-scratchbox-install_5.0.sh -s /scratchbox

then added my user

sudo sh maemo-scratchbox-install_5.0.sh -u vlad -s /scratchbox

then I added this like in /etc/sysctl.conf:

abi.vsyscall32 = 0

and ran

sudo sysctl -p

then started scratchbox

sudo /scratchbox/sbin/sbox_ctl start

and installed the SDK

./maemo-sdk-install_5.0.sh

login to scratchbox, add the apt sources after acknowledging the license from http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/eula/index.php , and ran the updates (this part of the Documentation):

[sbox-FREMANTLE_X86: ~] > sb-conf select FREMANTLE_ARMEL
[sbox-FREMANTLE_ARMEL: ~] > nano /etc/apt/sources.list # add deb line
[sbox-FREMANTLE_ARMEL: ~] > apt-get update
[sbox-FREMANTLE_ARMEL: ~] > fakeroot apt-get install nokia-binaries nokia-apps

Now I want to just start the emulator: I login to scratchbox

/scratchbox/login

in one console, start Xephyr in another

Xephyr :2 -host-cursor -screen 800x480x16 -dpi 96 -ac

and export the $DISPLAY to be :2 in scratchbox.

And here's what I got when running af-sb-init.sh start:

Re: maemo 5 sdk install/usage

Ok, so the last part (starting the emulator) actually works for x86 (same instructions as above).

Moving on, I have it up and running (a bit slowly) and.. without transalations for labels (I get a lot

Gtk - Locale not supported by C library. Using the fallback 'C' locale.

I don't know much about what you are trying to do but those commands seem to be for a debian based system. Not arch based. You'll need to find another way to install nokia-binaries and nokia-apps.

Re: maemo 5 sdk install/usage

I suppose Maemo is based on Debian - those are commands given in the scratchbox console.

Re: maemo 5 sdk install/usage

You need to do

[sbox-FREMANTLE_ARMEL: ~] > sb-conf select FREMANTLE_X86
[sbox-FREMANTLE_X86: ~] > nano /etc/apt/sources.list # add deb line
[sbox-FREMANTLE_X86: ~] > apt-get update
[sbox-FREMANTLE_X86: ~] > fakeroot apt-get install nokia-binaries nokia-apps

and run the updates for that as well, then it will work. You need to be in the X86 mode to run things on your computer, like the interface. If it says sbox-FREMANTLE_ARMEL it will be trying to run the ARM binaries which won't work right even in qemu afaik. You need to be running af-sb-init.sh start at the [sbox-FREMANTLE_X86: ~] > prompt.

BTW you can use the -F option for ./maemo-scratchbox-install_5.0.sh instead of setarch. Not sure if that makes a difference.

Also, in case anyone will find it useful, I made the following file on my pc:

/usr/local/bin/maemo:

#!/bin/bash
sudo sysctl abi.vsyscall32=0
sudo /scratchbox/sbin/sbox_ctl start
Xephyr :2 -host-cursor -screen 800x480x16 -dpi 96 -ac -kb &
/scratchbox/login
killall -q Xephyr
sleep 1
sudo /scratchbox/sbin/sbox_ctl stop
sudo sysctl abi.vsyscall32=1

And the following files in my home dir in scratchbox:
~/.bashrc:

if [ -f ~/.installation_environment ]; then
    . ~/.installation_environment
fi
export DISPLAY=:2
af-sb-init.sh start &> /dev/null

~/.bash_logout

af-sb-init.sh stop

Now, (after running chmod +x /usr/local/bin/maemo) I can simply type 'maemo' to open up scratchbox with the phone interface running, and then type 'exit' in scratchbox to tidy everything up.

Re: maemo 5 sdk install/usage

As a sidenote, you should wrap the install in a PKGBUILD to lessen the risk of messing up your system, and making it easier to upgrade/uninstall later.

Re: maemo 5 sdk install/usage

Thanks for your answers.

patstew: You're right, the emulator works only in x86.
Are you saying that you're running Xephyr with the -kb option? Mine (xorg 1.7.1 from testing) does not have that one. What does it say in the --help that it does?
And your GUI appears with the strings translated?

Mr.Elendig I hope that only the /scratchbox folder was touched. However, even for things like installing scratchbox as a service et all, a PKGBUILD would be useful too. I will probably give it a thought when deciding to reinstall big_smile

+1 for having PKGBUILD to do maemo development... cool

Let's get ready for N900. wink

Re: maemo 5 sdk install/usage

A PKGBUILD would be interesting. How would you get around the maemo-scratchbox-install.sh's requirement to NOT be run as fakeroot? running an su command would work, but I imagine that doesn't very well adhere to the Arch Way (tm). Would that be the job of an install file (eg post_install)?

Re: maemo 5 sdk install/usage

Yeah, I tried writing a quick PKGBUILD to install scratchbox and the maemo SDK, but I ran into the fakeroot problem. What's the limitation here, does anyone know?

Also, how did you get around this error?

Installing from Debian packages.
dpkg: `update-rc.d' not found on PATH.
dpkg: 1 expected program(s) not found on PATH.
NB: root's PATH should usually contain /usr/local/sbin, /usr/sbin and /sbin.
E: Scratchbox command '/scratchbox/sbin/sbox_adduser' is not executable.
E: Something went wrong with the install. Sorry.
V [00:53:40 10.12.2009]: Installer execution failed
V [00:53:40 10.12.2009]: ----- Begin logging exception -----

I guess I don't have update-rc.d installed.. but there's also the path error (could this be as I ran the installer through sudo, not 'as root')?

Cheers,

Pete.

Re: maemo 5 sdk install/usage

I would love for some easy way to install this on my arch x86_64 laptop.

I am a complete noob to the whole maemo sdk scene though; i just recently ordered an n900 off ebay (for $475; i guess i got a good deal) and would love to develop apps for it when it arrives.

if a package can't be built because of the fakeroot problem then maybe a clear step by step wiki entry would suffice?

just a suggestion; i am by no means an expert at anything really.

Re: maemo 5 sdk install/usage

Yeah, we need to pool our effort to get this thing working.

It kept me wondering though, why can't I just develop on it natively? The thing *is* a computer, right? ;-)

I have written some python programs for my Nokia 800 (maemo 4). It is possible to tweak them on the 800. It is much easier to use scratchbox/SDK, though. I don't know if the proper version of gcc runs on maemo--that would feel like a return to the 1980s. (BTW: I installed a Ubuntu partition to run scratchbox/SDK on. I am busy with other projects, so I have not worked on installing on Arch yet.)
