Update xorg, nvidia and framebuffer problems

Inspiron 1720
Nvidia 8600M GT

System fully up-to-date.  I do not compile my own kernel or use testing.

Since the xorg upgrade X crashes whenever, for example:

- Gnome power management blanks the screen.
- I play a game (say WoP) and when I exit, the screen resolution is set to 1024x768.  I can change it to 1900x1200 in nvidia settings, but doing so immediately crashes X.

In addition I have a weird screen corruption when switching to a console, suspend/resume or shutdown.

Changing the framebuffer resolution in menu.lst affects all of this considerably.  If I set it to e.g. vga=893 I have all of the problems fully.  vga=773 reduces the screen corruption but the crashes remain.

Removing the vga= altogether removes the problems.

But I'm stuck with a rather ugly startup.  Has anyone else seen this?  How can the framebuffer affect X in this way?

Re: Update xorg, nvidia and framebuffer problems

Rebuild yourself nvidia-utils and nvidia packages.

Re: Update xorg, nvidia and framebuffer problems

Thanks Giovanni.  Unfortunately this had no effect, so I have downgraded for the time being.  I will keep looking for a solution.
