Mouse cursor invisible after upgrade

Hi friends,

after today upgrade (pacman -Su) the mouse cursor is invisible. It`s hell I can`t use my computer.(I have my friend laptop with WindowsXP He is loughing to me lol )

I think it`s caused by XFCE4. Becouse mouse cursor under SLIM is visible.
Has anyone the same problem? Which application is responsible of showing cursor?

thanks in advence

Filip

Re: Mouse cursor invisible after upgrade

I would assume that it is something related to XFCE4 as even though X gives you a default cursor it is up to the DE to set a cursor style.

I haven't lost my mind; I have a tape back-up somewhere.

Re: Mouse cursor invisible after upgrade

I have the same problem and I'm running XFCE4 too. Although the pointer has only disappeared on the external display. It appears fine on laptop's display even when using mirror mode (lxrandr). When moving the mouse around even if I don't see the pointer I see boxes and menus being selected.

Re: Mouse cursor invisible after upgrade

Hi,

I have solved. Its XFCE4 issue.
Delete ./config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/displays.xml

Re: Mouse cursor invisible after upgrade

I don't have such file in ~/.config/xfce4/xfce-perchannel-xml/. Here are the files I have in this dir:

- xfce4-desktop.xml
- xfce4-keyboard-shortcuts.xml
- xfce4-mixer.xml
- xfce4-notifyd.xml
- xfce4-power-manager.xml
- xfce4-session.xml
- xfce4-settings-manager.xml
- xfwm4.xml
- xsettings.xml

Thank you for help
Alphazo

PS: I also noticed that when clicking on "Mouse" under XFCE4 control panel doesn't open any configuration window anymore.

Re: Mouse cursor invisible after upgrade

I had only invisible cursor. Clicking worked.
Try rename all directory .config. You see. whether it`s possible fixed by XFCE4 configuration or not.

I still can not start XFCE4 mouse setting. But I see cursor.

Re: Mouse cursor invisible after upgrade

Hello, I had that problem also, see here

http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=82948

I think you can also fix it by just changing the resolution with xrandr, rather than enabling dual monitor desktop as I did in the link above.

Re: Mouse cursor invisible after upgrade

I have same issue in the Gnome. Cursor appeared after login as root in gnome-terminal. I dont know how these two things are connected between itselves but I rebooted twice and repeated same trick.

Looks like there are some problems with rights.

UPDATED: I killed this file "/home/<user>/.config/monitors.xml" and problem dissolved.

Re: Mouse cursor invisible after upgrade

Hi, same problem here!
Here is my configuration: Xfce 4.6.1, xorg just updated, laptop with external monitor. As some of you said the problem affect only the external monitor. Moreover the command xfce-mouse-settings returns:

xfce4-mouse-settings-CRITICAL **: XI is not present or too old.

None of the .config deletion works for me. A little workaround is switching to CLI  (CTRL+ALT+F1) and coming back to X (CTRL+ALT+F7): the pointer will appear.
So I think the problem could be the update of libxi (1.3-2) or a lack of Xfce's updates.

Thanks for your help

Re: Mouse cursor invisible after upgrade

Hi!

I have a similar problem after the recent update, except that deleting config files or switching to console and back to X does not help. The mouse pointer is sitting in the upper left corner in xfce as well as in openbox and pure X. The funny thing is that it's possible to move the pointer a couple of pixles along the left border of the screen, but after a few seconds it jumps back to the upper left corner. It seems like it's constantly moving up and left.

Guess I'll have to downgrade some packages..

Update: I downgraded xf86-input-evdev to 2.2.5-1, xorg-server to 1.6.3.901-1 and xf86-video-intel to 2.8.1-1, and now everything works fine again.

Re: Mouse cursor invisible after upgrade

I thought the problem was gone after playing with lxrandr. Today pointer is gone again. I don't have any monitor.xml to remove as mentioned in vennen's post. However the ALT+F1, ALT+F7 did the trick to get the pointer back (but xfce4-mouse-settings still unresponsive). I guess I can live with that until packages get updated.

[EDIT] Just updated the system including xfce4-settings and xfce4-power-manager. Guess what? xfec4-mouse-settings is now working again.

Re: Mouse cursor invisible after upgrade

I'm having the same issue though I can trigger it in a different way, not using XFCE.

I have a dual head setup on a laptop, one monitor on VGA one on DVI. When I disable LVDS and enable dual screen with the DVI and VGI screen, the mouse then only works on the VGA monitor. If I go back to single head the mouse appears, but there is no way for me to get the mouse pointer showing up on both screens. Any ideas?

Re: Mouse cursor invisible after upgrade

i got the same problem also with dual head will doing:
xrandr --output VGA --mode 1680x1050

'fixed'  with downgrading xorg-server input-evdev video intel and ignoring dependancy intel-vesa.

hope this will be fixed with the next update?

Can you specify your version ? I've got this problem too with my dual head setup. On the external monitor the cursor is there but on the laptop monitor it's invisible. This is my xrandr setup:

xrandr --output DVI-0 --auto --output LVDS --auto --left-of DVI-0

Re: Mouse cursor invisible after upgrade

I also found that enabling KMS seems to fix the invisible mouse problem with dual head display.

Re: Mouse cursor invisible after upgrade

I am also having this same problem now with my recent (3-4 days) update. Running xfce4.6 and the latest xorg 1.7.3. thought everything was stable even after rebooting once I went to xorg 1.7, but not sure what broke this time. I removed a few files under ~/.config/xfce4/xfce-perchannel-xml/. such as - xfce4-session.xml and - xsettings.xml, and even a few others under /home/<user>/.config/xfce4, but still no mouse.

I tried ctl-alt-f1 but could not get back to X.

IF I put the system to standby, when it comes back the mouse is there!  neutral

Any ideas?

Re: Mouse cursor invisible after upgrade

FWIW, I got this bug recently in the xorg-server 1.8.2 -> 1.9.2 upgrade. Solved by downgrading libxcursor from 1.1.11 -> 1.1.10. Maybe someone forgot to recompile everything that depends on libxcursor. I'm sure part of xfce depends on it.

EDIT: The problem has resurfaced without me doing anything to libxcursor sad
