I just purchased a generic hp remote control/infared usb dongle, and I'm wondering how I can map it to the gnome multimedia keys and/or keyboard keys so I can use it with exaile/vlc/whatever.
Both definitely work, and lsusb shows that it's plugged in, but I really don't know where to go from there.

Ok. So after some more research, this says that xev can be used in addition to a configuration file to map events to keys.
New problem: xev doesn't return anything for my remote. I probably need drivers for it then, right? What kind of drivers does an IR reciever use?
Edit: Lirc seems to be what I need.
Edit: irrecord gives me this output every time:
$ sudo irrecord /etc/lirc/lircd.conf
irrecord: file "/etc/lirc/lircd.conf" does not contain valid data
I thought irrecord was supposed to make a config file, but I guess not.
Edit: it does, I was just doing it wrong. You have to use
# irrecord -d /dev/lirc0 ~/tempfile.conf
Now that I have a config file, I just need to map it to keys.
