yesterday a decided to install arch linux for the first time and got some problems.
i tried to install KDE but it works really slow.I mean it takes me 2-3 secs while open Kickoff menu or close some window.
I googled a bit a i found that there is some bug in last xorg update. but all complaination were from owners of nvidia grafic cards and i got ATI mobility Radeon X2300.
but i decided to use that solution and downgrade xorg package.
I downgrade only packages which start wit xorg-server.....
and prevent them from upgrading again
i noticed some improvement but its still slow an performance is low. now i doest take 3 sec but only 2
then i tried to use glxgears but here is the output
# glxgears
Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 keyError: couldn't open display :0.0
Because i am new in Arch and linux at all, I thing that there is some problem with my graffic card driver or something,
please culd you tell me if I should downgrade any other package or wait until xorg will by repaired? or what?
And the second issue. Why I cant use glxgears ?

First off, I would try to disable kernel mode setting. There seem to be some problems with it and ATI cards. Follow this guide to disable KMS:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI … _.28KMS.29
What video driver do you use (xf86-video-ati, etc.)?
Offline
i use xf86-video-radeonhd driver
i tryied to disalbe KMS. it sems to be much more quicker now and glxgears works now, but its still not good.
here is output:
glxgears
993 frames in 5.0 seconds = 198.133 FPS
1291 frames in 5.0 seconds = 258.007 FPS
1309 frames in 5.0 seconds = 261.700 FPS
1302 frames in 5.0 seconds = 260.397 FPS
1320 frames in 5.0 seconds = 263.929 FPS
1320 frames in 5.0 seconds = 263.975 FPS
1312 frames in 5.0 seconds = 262.378 FPS
1320 frames in 5.0 seconds = 263.929 FPS
1321 frames in 5.0 seconds = 264.048 FPS
1297 frames in 5.0 seconds = 259.268 FPS
1321 frames in 5.0 seconds = 264.190 FPS
1316 frames in 5.0 seconds = 263.188 FPS
is it good or bad?
but whole problem with kde is still here.
I try to describe it in more details
when i klick on the window in backgroud or minimalize some window, it goes in few steps.
frist i see the border of the window i shoud see on the top. then is fills with the colour and finaly it show me all the contend thet shoul be there. and It all take between 1-2 sec.
It really annoying when i have to wait so long just to switch active window.
btw.thnx for such quick response

With old xorg and catalyst driver:
[~]: glxgears
30798 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6159.557 FPS
So yeah thats a driver and xorg problem you have.
