Re: Should i install Archlinux?

It certainly is fast - but not so "out of the box" primarily because you don't get much at all out of the box...

Read the Beginners' Guide: it will answer all your questions and will give you a pretty good idea of how comfortable you will be with attempting to install and run it:

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners%27_Guide

Welcome to the forums -- and good luck!

It doesn't come with one, it gives you the freedom to install whatever DE you want.

Re: Should i install Archlinux?

If you read and follow the guide and the wiki. Then it is isn't as hard as it may seem.

Re: Should i install Archlinux?

When you work with Arch you are going to learn a lot about linux. If you got time and patience to learn, arch is the way to go. You will get all information you need out of the wiki and this forum. But if you just want an initial impression how linux is like, i would recommend to give xubuntu a try.

Re: Should i install Archlinux?

After installing Arch you have the CLI (shell/login prompt).

Re: Should i install Archlinux?

I would not recommend Arch to someone who has never used Linux and wants his computer to just work.

Of course, if you know a lot about your computer (like what kind of sound card, etc. you have) and if you enjoyed tuning your software before, you could give Arch Linux a go. But if it does not work out for you, this does not mean that Linux failed. In that case, just try another distro like Suse, Mandriva, K/Ubuntu.

Just out of curiosity, what part of CrunchBang do you wish was faster?

Re: Should i install Archlinux?

Light and fast often means more manual configuration work.  Arch is a great choice for light and fast but as was already said, be ready to spend some time reading through the guides, wiki and forums.  Arch has some of the best documentation of any distro so if you're willing to spend the time, you'll most likely find the answers you need.

If you get frustrated, I second xubuntu as a good choice for your hardware.  Once you get comfortable with that, Arch may seem a little easier.

After reading this post quoted above, I would say the answer to your first question "Should I install Archlinux?" is a resounding NO then, to the one "Is it complicated for a linux noobie?" is YES, it is.

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Arch_Linux
The very FIRST LINE reads .....

Arch Linux is an independently developed i686/x86-64 community distribution, based on a rolling-release model and targeted at competent GNU/Linux users...

emphasis mine...

Not trying to be mean here......but if you "need alot better explanation" than the beginner's guide on the wiki.... I'm pretty sure you need to start with another distro.
But if you decide to try Arch Linux, I wish you the best.

Re: Should i install Archlinux?

If i was not happy with my arch/gnome/openbox setup i would give crunchbang a shot, but from an easy-to-configure point of view i think (x)ubuntu might be the better choice.

Re: Should i install Archlinux?

antix is a nice one.  I have it running on my netbook right now and it is much more responsive than anything else I've tried on it except a really minimal Arch.  For a light distro it also looks pretty good IMO.
