Parted Magic based on Arch?

Parted Magic has been a hand made mess created almost entirely by myself over the past 4 years. I'm looking into possibly basing Parted Magic 5.0 on Archlinux so it has real package management.

Can anybody give me some pointers on what would be the best way to get started.? I would like to keep Parted Magic under 100MB if possible.

Re: Parted Magic based on Arch?

First off, I got to say I <3 Parted Magic.  A simple elegant, nicely put-together, efficient, maintenance tool.  Never got to say, but appreciate your work, it has saved me on a number of occasions.

As to how to get started, I probably couldn't say anything more that the Beginners' Guide on the wiki.  Great resource for many installs.  Since Arch is a build-it-yourself distro, you pretty much build it how you like.  As for the details you might need to build something like Parted Magic I think more details will be needed.

I'd say: get in touch with dieter@be about AIF - the arch installer framework. It is now the default way of installing archlinux and I thought one could make 'profiles' or defaults easily.

Not sure if Arch would be good for your application. You site states

Parted Magic requires at least a i586 processor and 256MB of RAM to operate or 128MB in "Live" mode.

However arch requires i686. If this something you can live with, well there are no problems tongue

The Parted Magic 4.x series should be valid for older i586 computers until the day they go in the trash. The number of people still using i586 computers is getting pretty small. Users get pissed off at me all the time, so I'm used to it. wink

Archlinux is like Slackware with dependency checking. I wish I would have used it sooner.

Re: Parted Magic based on Arch?

Well that might be a temporary solution, but lets face it, the chances of that project lasting for an extended amount of time is slim. I hope it does last, but in all reality it will probably die off. It takes a lot of work to maintenance a whole repo and the technology is old. But with this said...

@OP just be prepared to compile the pkgs you need if you want your livecd to be i586 compatible.

Re: Parted Magic based on Arch?

Parted Magic is very nice.  And I liked the conky display.  I used Parted Magic a couple of weeks ago to partition my new laptop.
