Uswsusp vs pm-utils. What's the difference?

I'm currently using pm-hibernate & pm-suspend on my ThinkPad T61p. Hibernating is fast but resume is slow, it takes almost 2 minutes. I've read on Ubuntu Forums that ditching pm-utils and using uswsusp instead dramatically increases resume speed. Why is that? What does uswsusp do different? Should I also switch?

uswsusp (userspace suspend) is one of the 3 possible backends for pm-utils. Generally, if one doesn't work for you, one of the others may. A bit more info: http://www.tuxonice.net/features.html

I had to use uswsusp with my hp dv6000, as the standard pm-utils backend would not resume from suspend properly. It's pretty easy to setup if you follow the wiki entry for pm-utils. As to why, well, I can't answer that for you smile But it's worth a try!

Use the tuxonice kernel (kernel26-ice), the compression means its really fast. Basically you need a hibernate method which actually uses compression.

If you're in a rush, that is... if you feel that a second or two here or there isn't going to make a huge difference to your life, I'd suggest sticking with the stock Arch kernel, and one of the other two suspend backends. smile
