some time in the last few updates I seem to have lost the functionality of window notification sounds, eg. when a terminal running pine receives a new email message, or you've hit backspace too many times, etc.
this may have stopped working around the same time I stopped being able to lock the screen via the gnome-panel screen-locking applet button. I use gdm & openbox with a gnome-panel, so had assumed the screen-locking failure would not be experienced by those using the gnome desktop outright. the sounds are more important though, as it is very nice to hear the arrival of an email message while you are working on another desktop...
does anyone know how to troubleshoot this? I am using alsa drivers, and sound in general works (eg. xmms or from multimedia).
in case this is informative, when I click on the screen-locking button from the gnome-panel I hear a sound, just nothing happens. But *other* useful sounds are awol.
(I've already looked through the gnome configuration gui (volume-control), and nothing accessible there makes any difference.)
