[PROBLEM IS FOUND - RE] Dual Layer DVD does not reading but recognized

Inserted DVD +R DL, the system recognizes it as Blank DVD +R DL but does not reading data.
How to fix it?
Please in plain English step-by-step instructions are welcome!

Re: [PROBLEM IS FOUND - RE] Dual Layer DVD does not reading but recognized

If it's a blank DVD+R, what data is there to read?

This DVD +R DL as all my others disks are NOT blanked.
I burned on them data and used them before in Debian Lenny without any problem (meaning I read them because they are not blanked).

Sorry, could you not flood on my post if you don't have real solution?
Thank You in advance!

Re: [PROBLEM IS FOUND - RE] Dual Layer DVD does not reading but recognized

Drives can break and dvds can stop working, did you try the dvd in another drive? Does any dvd work with that drive? Did you try using a live cd or other distro to check if that dvd works with that drive?

By the way B was not flooding your post, you didn't provide any relevant information except that the dvd is recognized as a blank. Other than stating the obvious and asking questions people can't just miraculously guess what the problem is and provide a solution.

Re: [PROBLEM IS FOUND - RE] Dual Layer DVD does not reading but recognized

Your question was ambiguous at best. I was trying to point that out in a playful way.

The obvious things to try - and I will assume you did not try it since you did not mention it - is to insert your other dual-layer DVD's - that contain data - into your optical drive. If they're not read, you know the drive is the problem. If they are read, you know the medium is the problem.

Easy, no?

Why people seek always hardware failure?
On manufactures still not cancelled quality control and standards, but software production suffers from lack .....

On that DVD burner I burned these disks, though...

Anyway I did more proper thing, I run Live CD with Ubuntu on this PC and voila! Mmy DVD dual laewyer now read, as it was before on Debian Lenny....

I insist THAT FAILUER IS SOFTWARE BASED AND I ASK JUST SOMEONE WHO KNOWS THAT ARCHLINUX.... AND CAN ADVICE WHAT I NEED TO DO....

Things have stopped working after some time of being used, they still continue to stop working and they will continue to stop working, thats why people ask about that. People asked because _you_ did not provide any useful details about your problem.

Now, was that so hard to test with the ubuntu livecd and rule out hardware failure? Another thing is that you don't need to shout. Shouting at the people that might be able to help you is not the best way to get help. Please refer to point 1.21 of the Forum Etiquette for more info.

Now about your problem, are there any errors in dmesg after you insert the dvd? Does it work to manually mount and read it as root?

Keep your temper please, I think we both know very well what uppercase means.

Also, allow me to congratulate you on your investigatory skills - eliminating is the easiest thing to do; maybe you should have done that first wink. I hope you understand the less information you provide, the more we have to ask the obvious questions. If there's anyone to get mad at: look in the mirror.

Re: [PROBLEM IS FOUND - RE] Dual Layer DVD does not reading but recognized

helam,

WTF do you mean my "manually" and "automatically"???

From the output, it looks like the drive is failing, but that's apparently been eliminated.

Now, have you ever been able to use the dvd in arch?
If not, what are the permissions on /dev/sr0?  and are you in the appropriate group?

automatically - when I just put dvd into dvd-rom and wait, after copied dmesg tail info.
manually, I put dvd into dvd-rom and wrote mount /dev/dvd /mnt, after copied dmesg tail info.

yes I was able to use it all time if I put cd disks or previuos generation dvd (not dual layer).

Re: [PROBLEM IS FOUND - RE] Dual Layer DVD does not reading but recognized

From the output of dmesg it can be seen that the drive you are using can't read the first sector of the dvd, that usually indicates that the drive has aged and is not capable of reading cds/dvds as well as it could when new or that the dvd as degraded/aged and it is hard to read.

To summarize it seems that one of three things is happening:

1) That dvd is no longer readable either because the organic part of the dvd has degraded or it is scratched (common problem)

2) That drive is no longer able to read that dvd because it is no longer conforming to the specifications due to usage or aging and/or the disc has degraded.
Again, things break and/or age, nothing lasts forever, specially cheap consumer grade hardware, if you have important data in that dvd I recommend you try to make a backup copy of it with another drive just to be safe. Another drive may be able to read that dvd, either because it is newer and can read the media better or die to different read strategies implemented in the firmware (common problem).

3) Maybe a new kernel bug or regression for the particular drive you are using (very unlikely but not impossible).

Re: [PROBLEM IS FOUND - RE] Dual Layer DVD does not reading but recognized

This is not a hardware , <aged> etc. related to my DVD failure.
I insisit there is somethig wrong with software - OS I installed two weeks ago.

1. When I run livecd - Ubuntu, liveUSB - Debian LXDE - that DL dvd and all my other dl dvd disks read like a charm.
2. Before I use Debian Lenny, this and all my dual layer disks read like a charm.
3. More than that!, I use now this dual layer dvd on other laptop (Debian lenny 5.0.3) and voila! that read like a charm.

From these above I make conclusion - there is something wrong with software - as I wrote in my first reply above.
People stop defend software, any software from experience has lack of professional (by specialists) quality control - one has more QA control, others less,,,

I just looking for help from prefessional programmer that really wrote and changed and coded in this project ARCHLINUX.

Because such specialist can understand what is going wrong really and what I have to do as user (most of people that use linux I assume users and not have programmer profession, meaning they are all professionals but in their particular fields)

So, Just stop - stop - stop talking about hardware failure.

Thank You for trying to help me but I need really advice from professional!

I quite agree, however, I only question a professional what?

Now, if you want continuing help on this issue.....

What groups are you in?  Is your user in the optical group?

Also, what type of dvd drive do you have?  (as in brand name and model)

Now, just so that you know, a "professional" would be asking these same questions as well.  And FYI, I have DONE this type of work, over the telephone no less, for a living, but please don't call me a professional, because I don't screw people for money.  I'm not a lawyer.

So, are you done fighting the process and willing to let people help you?  Or are you going to continue to fight it and drive everyone away?

Your choice.

Re: [PROBLEM IS FOUND - RE] Dual Layer DVD does not reading but recognized

Ok,  so it can read live-cd's and when booted to a live cd, these discs that are giving you fits in Arch work like a charm.....

Ok.... so then the next question is, "What changed?"

Do you have d-bus and hal set up to run on boot?  (that would be in your daemons line in /etc/rc.conf)  However, if you have X running then you must have hal and d-bus set up, but it doesn't hurt to check and make sure.

Another thing,  do single layer dvd's work?  or how about cd-roms?   Do they do the same thing as the double layer?

yes, i have them both (all i have, you can read on the website in beginners guide wiki arch, in the end i installed gnome, and no installed any nvidia and ati drivers).

2. Another thing,  do single layer dvd's work?  or how about cd-roms?   Do they do the same thing as the double layer?
i don't understand you. my profession is not programmer.

all i did - read users guides and did all steps by steps in what there were described,
without thinking, figuring out etc waisting my time (i suppose you understand that pc is just a tool to speed up our work, life activities etc), i assume, theses, who wrote the guides, are professionals.

anyway, i can say, dvd burner works like a charm with cd, dvd, rewritable cd, dvd+r and dvd-r, as well as dvd-ram. except reading dvd dual layer dvd dl +r.

Re: [PROBLEM IS FOUND - RE] Dual Layer DVD does not reading but recognized

As I can see, no one understand the problem, I found the reason and probable solution:
Archlinux kernel maintainer should apply official UDF 2.01/2.50 patch to the kernel.
All I know all dvd dl created with UDF 2.50 by default in nero or in windows platforms.

Thank you all who tried to help, but as usual , I found solution by myself.

Interesting how to send a request to kernel maintainer?
Second I would like him/her to do what , even, Ubuntu team has done, to provide official kernel with support to 64 GB , as novadyas all computers come with 36-bit processors.
To anyone who can say Ok, there is 64 bit bla-bla..., I now no any regular user use 64-bit processors, where must be 64 bit OS, only 36 bit (so 64GB).
OK.
