X hanging up after system update

Hello,

Today I updated my system and when I try to boot in GUI (init 5), the system becomes unresponsive. I also tried to boot to console and then issue xinit, startx, init 5, etc. but the same thing happens. The system does not respond to any keystrokes and the only way is to poweroff the machine. This has occurred many times. I also reinstalled the xorg group, but still it wont help. Also, after I deleted old Xorg logs, new logs are NOT generated. I followed the wiki (Xorg setup), but it doesnt help either. Any help in this regard will be highly appreciated.

Thanks

Re: X hanging up after system update

do you have hal in your daemon list? (in /etc/rc.conf DAEMONS=(... hal ... )?

Edit: you need hal for keyboard/mouse detection/handling when using evdev (default)

Re: X hanging up after system update

Do you have an ATI graphics card with KMS enabled? If yes, try to disable it.

Yes, I have it. I also had dbus (either before or after hal), but faced problems, so I removed dbus. When the system starts, hal anyway starts dbus (as mentioned in wiki/hal page, as well as I observe it during system boot).

I have an Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME card.

How do I disable KMS (if applicable)?

Disable KMS: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Intel_Graphics

Add "nomodeset" to your kernel line. If you've modified /etc/mkinitcpio.conf according to the wike, reverse the modifications and regenerate initramfs. You may wish to add "vga=" to your kernel line for a nice boot screen.

Actually, with the Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME card you should probably have KMS enabled.

Re: X hanging up after system update

Interesting... I have finally updated my laptop again. Haven't done this for months now, so I had over 2GB of updates ^^. Anyway I have an 855GME card too and after finalizing the upgrade (1 hour ago) startx would lock up my system completely. There's not even a log here either.

I remember that I already had this problem once but I have no plan what I have done back then anymore wink.

Re: X hanging up after system update

Ah got it... after all enabling(!) KMS fixes it.

Add "i915.modeset=1" to your kernel-line in /boot/grub/menu.lst but remove any "vga=..." or "video=..." parameters you may have there. Then add "intel_agp" and "i915" to the MODULES line in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf, reboot and you should be done.
