Group management: audio, optical, storage, ... are they still in use?

Hi,

I came across an Arch forum thread bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=84635&p=1, which is related to hal issues. There was a post, I quote:

... At this moment udev already sets ACLs based on consolekit logins, which replaces the need for audio, video, storage, etc groups. Every distribution is switching to consolekit based setups, and in the future we might even remove those groups....

Currently my groups returns:

network audio optical storage power users

So, just to clarify things, do I need to be in those groups to mount usb devices, orshutdown the machine? I haven't found any mentioning of those groups in files in /etc/dbus-1/system.d... I do have, however

exec ck-launch-session xfce4-session

in my .xinitrc.

Anyway, I think there should be something said in the wiki about it...
BTW, wicd/networkmanager do not need your user to in network group, right?

Thanks.

I use wicd without being in the network group, and I believe I have used networkmanager as well on this setup.

Thanks for your reply.

I guess this works because in /etc/dbus-1/system.d/wicd.conf the privileges are given to the group users, not network.

I think, that my questionreally boils down to the following. If I remove ck-launch-session, then I will have to create some policies in /etc/dbus-1/system.d, which will say something like: only users in the power group can shutdown the machine, users in the storage group can mount usb, etc... is that correct, or am I missing something?

L.
