Hi,
I had xorg-server 1.6.3 and it worked well, but after upgrade to xorg-server-1.7.1 when I try to run startx, I see only black screen. I have downgraded that package and it's OK again. (I'm using HAL and I have no xorg.conf)
Any ideas?
And one more problem. When I run
/etc/rc.d/kdm start
and try to log in, I see only black screen. But when I run
startx
(.xinitrc contains "exec wmii") wmii works well. I have no idea what's wrong.
when I write "exec startkde" to .xinitrc KDE works well too.

What graphics card do you have? Your problems may be related to kernel mode setting. Did you try to disable KMS?

/var/log/kdm.log
might provide some clues as to what's going on w/ kdm.
As for your black screen, you're not using catalyst are you? Because catalyst does not support the new Xserver. If you're using the open source ATI "radeon" driver or intel card then it may indeed be a kernel mode setting issue.

intel graphics card, lspci says:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device (rev 02)
KMS is disabled by defaut, isn't it? I haven't enabled it before. I try it now and it's working.

I have the same graphics card. In order to get it properly working, I had to configure KMS according to the Intel wiki. After that, everything works fine, even with xorg-server 1.7.
