No sound - alsamixer shows no master volume bar

Well I have been having an interesting issue with my sound and alsa.
I have no sound on my laptop. When I open alsamixer, it doesn't show a bar for my master volume, even if I try to raise it or lower it. It isn't muted.
I don't really know where to begin with this. I was running ubuntu 9.10 and 9.04 recently, and I had sound issues with those too. My sound would work for a while and out of no where start repeating sounds indefinitely. This would normally lead one to believe it was a hardware issue, but my sound in Windows XP works perfectly and I've never had an issue with it.

Where do I start with this?
I already went through the beginner's guide and searched the forums, but nothing has worked.

Have a look at the troubleshooting section of the ALSA wiki:

Still nothing. My alsa mixer is now showing a <pcm> bar and a <cd> bar, both of those alterable, and now a <front> bar, but master still isn't changeable and neither is the new <front> bar.

Woah! All of a sudden, it works. I don't know why, but it's working. Stupid crap. I still have no master bar or front bar, but whatever. I have working sound. Alsamixer is an issue for another day.
