I have verified that acpid is running but modprobe fails with the following modules: toshiba-acpi, acpi-cpufreq, p4-clockmod, powernow-k6, powernow-k7, powernow-k8, and speedstep-centrino. Each one except speedstep-centrino returns the "no such device" error as described http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Cpufreq . Speedstep-centrino cannot be found when a modprobe is attempted.
Processor is a Celeron M 900 2.2 gig single-core. Bios is Insyde H2O.
There looks like some kind of bios error flashing past during the boot sequence. Is there a bios setting that I should look to change to enable the modprobe?

Is your processor capable of frequency scaling? I am unsure, since it is a Celeron. You may also look at your manufacturers site if there is a bios update.

I will do some research to see if my processor can engage in frequency scaling.
There is a bios update available for my laptop but I could only find the windows executable file download. I don't know if I can upgrade the bios under Linux.

Did some additional research on your processor and found this from Intel:

It looks as if this describes your processor, but if you look at the Advanced Technologies, it says that this processor doesn't support Intel SpeedStep Technology.

Thank you very much for all of your help. I'm glad to know that I wasn't screwing up the modprobe somehow.
