During setup installed nvidia, xorg, xf86input-evdev and keybd and mouse. Ran 'nvidia-xconfig' and edited mouse and horiz. and vert. rates. 'startx' or 'xinit' get me to screen with tvm, clock and terminal where typing 'exit' 2x get me back to prompt. But then I get repeat/continual message as in title and "stopping x for 5 mins."
~./xinitrd doesn't exist. So I can't comment out the xterm line.
Can someone suggest solution pls:)

I presume you're trying to start xdm through /etc/inittab and it isn't installed - pacman -S xorg-xdm to install it.
If you want to start your WM/DE through startx, disable xdm in inittab and create ~/.xinitrc as described here.

I suggest you follow the steps in Beginners' Guide for testing X.
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beg … #C:_Test_X
It explains how to create .xinitrc

Solved by editing /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc to stop xdm. Now on kde desktop after editing /etc/inittab to choose init5 and kdm. Xdm was never chosen there. Thx for tips and reminders. woot!
