installed arch on virtual box and has problems getting gnome

I wanted to tey arch and I installed it on a virtualbox with an ubuntu host.
All I have is the command line and this is (as root) types in.
pacman -Syy gnome
And it returned
"error:failed to update core(no servers configured for repository)
"error:failed to update extra(no servers configured for repository)
"error:failed to update community(no servers configured for repository)
"error:failed to synchronize any databases

As a long term ubuntu user,to me no gui came as a shock, but then again,I want to learn.
Is there a way to install gnome?

Did you configure your mirrorlist?

Additionally, if you want gnome, you have first to install and configure X.

Do I just replace the # with =?

Your remove the # if you want to activate that line. My advise would be to select more than one mirror just in case the one you selected is not reachable. pacman will go through them top down.

edit /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist and remove # from a line with a server.

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

You didn't read the Beginners' Guide, did you? You really miss out if you don't read it. Its not only fun to read it really helps to gain some deeper understanding about Arch and it makes the installation process a lot easier and faster.

You probably removed the # from /etc/pacman.conf. What I meant is remove the # from /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist. Mirrors are sorted by country and you should select a mirror near you.
