dell studio 15 - battery life

ive got a dell studio 15 and im running a dual boot sys (arch and win7).
ive tried to follow the laptop configs from the arch wiki, but even tough the battery time with arch is way shorter.

with windows, I can use my lap around 3h in the battery mode and with arch is only around 2h.

any advice?

Re: dell studio 15 - battery life

I have the same problem with my macbook pro 5.5.

I installed cpufreq-utils and the ondemand-governor;
I installed and configured laptop-mode-tools
I installed pommed to control the automatic LCD-backlighting
I disabled my bluetooth

Things to do:
- maybe dim the backlight when on battery (to 80%)
- maybe kill the wifi when not needed

In Mac OSX I get 4.5h with wifi on (7h without wifi). In Archlinux I get 3.25h.

Zl.

That's because Mac OSX has some advanced energy saving features. You may try the powersave governor instead.

thanks for the replies

I did the same and some disk related tweaks from the wiki

still getting almost half time of battery life compared to windows.

I think the laptop feels hotter and noisier when im on linux..

Re: dell studio 15 - battery life

well, finded out here http://ubuntu-virginia.ubuntuforums.org … ?t=1214251  that the heat and one fan that looked always on have to do with the ati board

i was using the catalyst driver, but in the last xorg update had to switch to the radeonhd.

but even tough when i was using the proprietary drivers the battery life was around 2h.

still have to find a solution for that.

gonna try to switch again to the catalyst and see how it goes.

Re: dell studio 15 - battery life

you'd best to buy a extra one

keep the 9 cell it will last longer when using your laptop on battery than 6 cell
6 Cell Battery: 2.5 to 3.0 hours
9 Cell Battery: 3.5 to 4.0 hours

this battery have 6 cell and 9 cell ,be careful

6-cell-dell-studio-15-battery-250x250.jpg

9 cell dell studio 15 battery really doesn't make the laptop any less portable, and the extra runtime is definitely worth it.
