Kernel 2.6.31.6: libata says "device reported invalid CHS sector 0"

Hi!,
this morning my hard disk for some seconds freezed, but spinning wildly.

The log reported a lot of:

Nov 20 11:16:55 accipigna kernel: ata5.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x7e0fffff SErr 0x0 action
0x6 frozen

Nov 20 11:16:56 accipigna kernel: ata5.00: configured for UDMA/133

Followed by a lot of:

Nov 20 11:16:56 accipigna kernel: ata5.00: device reported invalid CHS sector 0

"smartctl" say that everything is ok with my disk (don't worry I have backups wink ).

In these day I noticed a slowing down of disk operations: the "Midnight Command" filemanager took ages to start as it did with older kernel releases (I use it dayly so I noticed the difference). The slow down happened after upgrading to kernel 2.6.31.6.

Re: Kernel 2.6.31.6: libata says "device reported invalid CHS sector 0"

I have the same issue, I did a backup of my entire disk with ddrescue, after kernel panic, and yes it was after installing kernel 2.6.31.*.
I used other applications to check HD physically  but they doesn't show errors.
So, I'm trying to install another OS with a different kernel.
I suppose that this would be fine.
Thanks.

Re: Kernel 2.6.31.6: libata says "device reported invalid CHS sector 0"

I replaced the disk that does the error: now everything works well. The disk was in a RAID array and often it degraded it, so I suspect it was a hardware error (even if smartclt says that everything is OK).
I can tell you more today, when I go to my computer shop to ask for RMA wink
