what is a usb-sound-mixer and where is it listened? (kmix?) does it work in alsamixer ? what modules do you load?

Sound mixer is listed in SYSTEM INFO CENTER under Sound.
I have a SIIG Soundwave Optical 5.1 USB sound device that operates well in Win and Knoppix. Software provided in windows permits it to supply stereo sound in USB connection as well as DVD video on USB connection.
I have no idea how to provide the enabling in arch but it is automatic in Knoppix Live CD.
The USB unit is very small...1/34 by 2 by3/4 inch and includes the uSB connector , a stereo mini-jack and an optical port for 5.1 surround sound.
Typically, arch connects to the motherboard audio on my a7v333 and no reference for this USB seems available in KMIX. Thus, it seems there is another mixer which is referenced in KDE SYSTEM INFO CENTER SOUND along with the normal sound mixer of Kmix.
That is all I know about the subject altho there are USB sound devices other than this one....some have amplified sound to drive speakers to ten watts per channel (Griffin).
I do not know whether the USB mixer will show in info center if a USB sound device is not present. I will remove the device and find out, however.
Sound has always been a " mixed" mess in Linux (win also).
Perhaps I have addressed your query sufficiently, but if not, continue....

Removed the USB device and the sound mixer disappeared from SYSTEM INFO CENTER SOUND but the kmix remained.
I will try a HOTPLUG now to see if it returns thereafter.
The unit lights up....and the USB mixer is re-installed per the SYSTEM INFOCENTER SOUND.
Now....where is the mixer? USBCORE refers to it on shutdown....

do you use the hotplug daemon? (in /etc/rc.conf::DAEMONS)
as far i understood, the device does not work, right?
is this the only soundcard on the system you are using?
check "lsmod" for a module for the device ... if you see none, install hwd (in extra - "pacman -S hwd") and run it to try to detect the modules for the device ... then try modprobe them and check in alsamixer and kmix again
good luck

hmm ...
seems that the alsamixer is using your on-board audio chip ... you can try to make alsamixer use your second hardware, if it exists:
alsamixer -c1
can you post the output of:
lsmod | grep snd
and
hwd -d
(the USB part)
?
i'm a little bit confused about the modules used

I have a CMI8738 sound chip built in the motherboard.
The USB sound is an external module made by SIIG and is called USB Soundwave Optical5.1 which has two ports: stereo jack and optical port with LED to optical cable for surround sound to TV(for example). It performs well in windows and in Knoppix and in STUX Live CD.
It isn't working in arch.
I read your code.....alsamixer -c1 (that is -c and a" one".
I just performed that entry and the alsamixer changed to the USB Mixer format.
I will now try an audio throughput.....
I received no throughput...Kmixer was set to PCI so changed to USB Audio mixer but no help.
Called alsmixer in cmd line....reverted to PCI mixer.
Re-commanded alsamixer -c1....... left it in window
retry throughput... no audio signal...
Re-check KMix...still set to USB Audio mode.
There is no input icon in the kde USB Audio mixer INPUT window.
Perhaps the mute is on but the alsamixer display is under the control of the arrow keys on the keyboard and is set to 100.
I conclude the SIIG device is not connected . either by not being connected to the output or by not receiving any input while being properly connected to the output.

the lsmod tells, that the module snd-usb-audio loads ok
more info on this module:
http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/do … =usb-audio
theoretically, both cards should work for you ... maybe you need to tell the apps you want to use, what card to use:
e.g. the first card is in most cases found under /dev/dsp0 and the second under /dev/dsp1 ... e.g. in xmms you can choose, what output you want in the preferences ... try to make musik to the 2nd card (dsp1) and if this is possible, then the config is ok, and your only problem is that the apps you are using should know what device to use
however, there is a chance, that the permissions are not ok or there is a module missing (i was not able to find this device in the alsa-project db of supported cards) ... can you compare the lsmod | grep snd of knoppix to arch? if there is a difference, this can maybe help solving the trouble
actually, i realized now, that there is nowhere really good documentation on how to use 2 sounddevices under linux ... funny ... anyone has time to write one?

Your last statement says a lot about this subject which is the subject of another post of mine regarding the two sound channels.
I will try the query in Knoppix to see how that OS handles the two channels and report the result. USB seems to be primary therein.
Permissions are hardly a problem unless there is a "no root" non-permission!!!!

The soundwave device plays the XMMS device, kaboodle, and noatun with wav. sound in STUX Live CD.
KDE Mixer is independent of the sound playing through the soundwave device on USB. Either mixer can be addressed in KMix while the XMMS is playing the wav. file with no effect on the performance.
The same display of a single pcm icon occurs in Kmixer when selecting USB Mixer (Called .....USB Audio Class Driver..... in STUX KDE.
While playing the wav. file in XMMS, the alsa mixer in command line displayed the cmipci mixer elements. Varying the values changed nothing.
XMMS is obviously using another source/mixer.
The action observed suggests that two audio channels, USB and PCI are simultaneously available in STUX Live CD. KDE provides the PCI mix and the other USB device (what is it?) feeds a second channel. They may not be useable simultaneously?
That's all I know and it isn't much!!!!!

No alsa in Knoppix.
If I remember correctly, Knoppix's default kernel is 2.4.x (no alsa). Type "kernel26" in boot prompt. Not sure if alsa will be detected because Knoppix's pcitable is old (Aug 2003).

I always use kernel 2.6 and alsa is not available therein.
I just ran STUX Live CD again to check the two audio channels provided therein.
I was able to run a CD .wav file in XMMS at the same time that I ran a 1GB video in XINE. The audio for XMMS was available on USB device output and the XINE audio available on the PCI device output, simultaneously. I used speakers on the XINE and a headset on the USB.
Still am not aware of what device is in use for USB!!!!
The answer lies in the details listed for the STUX Live CD previous post.

I have a surmise concerning the USB audio.
The fact that the USB mixer is an option (not understood how to use same) in KDE the result of tests with STUX linux Live CD indicate:
It seems to have an optical mode entry which , when used with the USB soundwave Optical 5.1 external device, provides a stereo output option at its stereo output jack. The sound thus generated has no response to volume controls provided in the system. This would be expected since the optical port supplies pseudo 5.1 surround sound for external processing and volume is controlled externally.
This does not establish the USB Audio mixer parameters in KDE.
I have generated another post asking for guidance on the use of the USB Audio mixer option in KDE.
It would seem possible to generate multiple optical audio channels via USB devices and perhaps also multiple audio channels with KDE using PCI and USB mixer options.
Stereo surround sound , anyone? 5.1, 10.1, 15.1..etc!!!!

SFS KNOPPIX, an internet loaded Knoppix derivative using kernel 2.6.7 has the capability of usb audio through the KDE mixer.
The term " USB Audio Class Driver" is used to identify the USB channel of the KDE mixer options.
The devices used in SFSKNOPPIX snd include:
usbcore usb- hid , snd- usb- audio, audio, usb storage, uhci-hcd ohci-hcd ehci-hcd
This info might give a clue as to the needs for archlinux usb snd.
