Awful beep on logout

Hi everyone,

I used to have this awful beep when it would get to the GDM login screen. I disabled this by setting SoundOnLogin=false in /usr/share/gdm/defaults.conf. That worked, but there is still this awful beep when I log out. It doesn't come from the internal speaker, it will go through anything plugged in to the computer. Any idea what this could be? It's truly terrible!

Thanks!

Re: Awful beep on logout

You could try disabling the module it rc.conf

 MODULES=(!snd_pcsp !pcspkr)

edit:  or try muting it in alsamixer

Re: Awful beep on logout

Thanks, but I was told to do that a while ago and I did. Those are still in there to this day and it still goes on. I also permanently muted the system beep in alsamixer. Didn't help.

To my knowledge, it's not a system beep, it's something gnome or gdm related.

Anyone else?

Try putting 'setterm -blength 0' in your .bashrc.

Just checked the Wiki, there are several options:

Re: Awful beep on logout

Well just to be clear, it's not the speaker within the computer, it goes out the main speakers or whatever is plugged into the headphone jack (currently some huge speakers, so it scares the crap out of me every time).

Also, I messed around a bit, it seems to ONLY happen when I shut down, rather than just switching users or logging out. I'm gonna try a few of these ideas.

Re: Awful beep on logout

Yay! It worked. Not sure which one, because I added basically all the ones on the list at once. Why would it be this way to begin with??

Re: Awful beep on logout

Just to be sure: did you try *all* the solution proposed in the wiki and still nothing?
Even putting 'setterm -blength 0' in your .bashrc didn't work?

Edit: try to undo all of them and keep just "my" solution.
