Need help deciding which package to use

Hello, I am very confused on which driver to use for my ATI Radeon 4650. I would like to use catalyst, but I have read that it does not work with X.org server 1.7. Can anyone help me on how to get the older Xorg server and all the packages to make catalyst work?

Would it be possible to install the latest xorg server and all other things with a DE, then downgrade while the DE is running?
