Blender + ATi: error, when moving object to another layer

Hello again.  Recently, I borrowed the book, "The Essential Blender," and got started at the awesomeness of Blender.  Unfortunately, when I press 'M' (for move to layer), then twidle my mouse a bit...it crashes with the following error:

$ blender -v
Blender 2.49 (sub 2) Build
$ blender &
blender: radeon_cs_gem.c:121: cs_gem_write_reloc: Assertion `bo->space_accounted' failed.

Checking Google briefly, this seems to be graphics card problem, rather than Blender itself.  I use an ATi card, with the following binary installed:

local/xf86-video-ati 6.12.99.git20091014-1 (xorg-video-drivers)
    X.org ati video driver

Any ideas how to conquer this problem?

P.S. and is there more than one way to move an object into another layer?

Hm, I get the same error when I try to change Blender's material color.  Maybe it has to do with opening a new window?
