[SOLVED]Can I downgarde CUPS to 1.3.x?

It seems that even the newest hplip is completely incompatible with newer CUPS 1.4.x, so I wanted to downgrade it to 13.x version. Is there any way to obtain it? (including checking-out git branches etc.)

Have a look here (the url is in the downgrade Wiki article):

Any facts to back that up?

I can confirm two HP printers working just fine with CUPS 1.4...

Re: [SOLVED]Can I downgarde CUPS to 1.3.x?

See here:

http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=661184

There is no way to make hp-setup work. I understand that I can use CUPS to set up the printing, but HP made nice qt4 tools explicitly for Linux users, and it would be better to administer my printer using them.

I was also able to do some magic to make the scanner work without hp-setup:

http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 06#p664806

But the strange thing is that xsane seemed to work fine, and after restarting my PC, xsane makes the scanner move and all, but as the outcome, produces only a blank window without the page in it. Skanlite takes 10x longer than xsane to scan, and it procudes >30MB files for one page (even though I set to save them as JPG)

Will investigate tommorow. But as I said, I bought an HP printer in hope for nice qt4 GUI tools and no need to fight with a printer to make it fully work, like I had with my previous Lexmark Z703.

Re: [SOLVED]Can I downgarde CUPS to 1.3.x?

Double-post for clearer message:

This repo seems like it would solve my problems:

http://www.schlunix.org/archlinux/extra/os/x86_64/

The cups there is 1.3.10. How can I set it to have higher priority over the standard /extra only for cups, cups-pdf and libcups? (I think pycups and gtklp don't apply)

PS.: Just tried removing cups, and seems like it will be a dependency hell. I can remove cups and cups-pdf without triggering dependency problems, but an attempt to remove libcups gives me:

[warnec@chakra-desktop ~]$ LANG=C tupac -R libcups
checking dependencies...
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: cupsddk: requires libcups
:: ghostscript: requires libcups>=1.4.0
:: gtk2: requires libcups>=1.4.1
:: gtklp: requires libcups
:: hplip: requires libcups>=1.3.10-3
:: pycups: requires libcups>=1.3.11
[warnec@chakra-desktop ~]$

Looks like I'm screwed, since gtk2 requires libcups 1.4.1 or higher.

Surely you're not serious about those GUI tools?

If HP creates pesky crapware that it installs along your regular pre-installed Windows on the PC you bought, does that mean you have to use them?

If you set it up using the CUPS interface, it should work fine. Frankly I'd to that first before rolling back to an old package.

Re: [SOLVED]Can I downgarde CUPS to 1.3.x?

Seems like I'd be able to make this work without hplip GUI tools. I reinstalled xsane and removed its config, and now seems to work fine. I've a strange problem though - the scans seem to look nice, but xsane introduces great image compression - even though I set it to save scans at .PNG:

PNG, compression rate set to 0:

PNG, compression rate set to 9:

PDF, so that you see that this issue does not only affect raster images:

Re: [SOLVED]Can I downgarde CUPS to 1.3.x?

To answer your original question, last week I successfully downgraded from CUPS 1.4 to CUPS 1.3.11. It wasn't too difficult, and my printer seems to be a little happier. I wrote detailed instructions about it here: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 36#p664736

Re: [SOLVED]Can I downgarde CUPS to 1.3.x?

Do you know if libcups can be left as 1.4.2? (see my previous post about why can't I change it)

Re: [SOLVED]Can I downgarde CUPS to 1.3.x?

PS.: I did as drcouzelis wrote and still have libcups 1.4.2. Despite this, I was able to get cups 1.3.11 running with no problem and [b]hp-setup worked perfectly this time![b/]

Thanks! ;D

PPS.: About the compression - I discovered I can change that in Xsane easily. Now works perfectly.

PPPS.: Is there any way to alter some kind of Pacman config file to ignore cups every time I update my system?

Re: [SOLVED]Can I downgarde CUPS to 1.3.x?

Sure, you can leave libcups. I didn't make any changes to it. smile

Besides, if you also need to downgrade libcups to version 1.3 for things to work properly, you can do that too. Thanks to Arch Linux being Arch Linux, you can do whatever you want. wink Just follow the same steps for downgrading cups, but for the packages libcups. Even libcups version 1.3 will "provide" pacman with "libcups", so it will be happy.

Re: [SOLVED]Can I downgarde CUPS to 1.3.x?

@up

the problem lies here:

[warnec@chakra-desktop ~]$ LANG=C tupac -R libcups
checking dependencies...
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: cupsddk: requires libcups
:: ghostscript: requires libcups>=1.4.0
:: gtk2: requires libcups>=1.4.1
:: gtklp: requires libcups
:: hplip: requires libcups>=1.3.10-3
:: pycups: requires libcups>=1.3.11
[warnec@chakra-desktop ~]$

I don't want to downgrade/use custom pkgs of gtk2 and ghostscript.

Is there any way to alter some kind of Pacman config file to ignore cups every time I update my system?

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dow … n_packages

I added "IgnorePkg = cups" in "/etc/pacman.conf".
