How to update KDE (with dependencies)?

I wanted to update KDE from 4.3.2 to 4.3.3
So I picked one package (kdebase-workspace) and updated. Unfortunately none of the other packages was updated automatically, which broke the system.

So do I have to install every single KDE package manually?

Moreover it seems kmail doesn't start since glibc has to be updated sad

What is the best way to update all of the installed KDE such that it works?

"pacman -Syu" will upgrade for you.

Re: How to update KDE (with dependencies)?

pacman -Syu

There are very few situations where updating a single package is a good idea. Update your system, and everything will be fine.

One more thing - it's 4.3.4 now, not 4.3.3.

Keep your Arch installation up-to-date. If you don't update for a long time, you will run into more issues than if you update regularly.

Welcome to the forums!

Check the following for more info on using pacman:

man pacman

Re: How to update KDE (with dependencies)?

I am a bit sceptical about -Syu. I did it now and it worked, but before it broke my system so many times.
The reasons were incompatibilities between new packages and the old configuration files (grub, xorg,...) and sometimes even missing/broken dependencies (readline, bash, ...).

Re: How to update KDE (with dependencies)?

Most of those problems arise from updating individual packages and not the whole system.  Others are a consequence of a rolling release which means you will need to update config files etc.

Using Arch and being sceptical about pacman -Syu is like driving a car and being sceptical about steering wheels.

You might be more comfortable using a distro with a more traditional release process.

Funny, being sceptical about the only recommended way to update your system wink.
