Presonus FP10 (Firepod)

I just cannot get this thing to run. I installed the following packages:

qjackctl qsynth ardour ladspa-plugins dssi hydrogen rosegarden lmms

After this, went on to install ffado-svn and libfreebob.

Nevertheless, my jack output is always this:

22:18:25.515 Statistics reset.

Please help.

Re: Presonus FP10 (Firepod)

You need to build jack yourself to enable firewire devices. That's why you're seeing this

jackd: unknown driver 'firewire'

jack-audio-connection-kit from extra doesn't have support for firewire or freebob backends.

There's a whole lot more to do to get reasonable performance (no xruns) and (if you're lucky) stability.

Have a look here http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pro_Audio

Also, FFADO is currently broken due to incompatibility with the new firewire stack in kernel 2.6.32.

Good luck wink

Re: Presonus FP10 (Firepod)

yep.  similar problem just with a firebox.  Even if you were to get a blue sync after you build jackd with freebob: it doesnt mean your firepod will be functional due to the new firewire stack.

gotta revert to the old stuff, which i cant seem to find a good way to do.  I would like to keep my current kernel (2.6.32) if possible...

Re: Presonus FP10 (Firepod)

I have a VERY similar device (presonus firebox) which works wonders in winblows, but I get a different error in arch; it is something like how it cannot detect the device.  I'm on winblows right now so I can't tell you.  Basically it looks for raw1394 but can't find it due to the new firewire being located on /dev/fw0.

Anyone know a workaround?  Someone suggested compiling the old firewire drivers, but I'm not so sure I can do that.  I have all the prerequisites located on the Pro Audio wiki entry(libraw1394 etc).
Ok here's the issue: running jackd -d firewire

firewire ERR: FFADO: Error creating virtual device
Cannot attach audio driver

Re: Presonus FP10 (Firepod)

if the problem has something to do with new firewire stack, you can use blacklist the new modules and modprobe the old ones (google for these terms)

Re: Presonus FP10 (Firepod)

@dieter: I am aware of that, however the kernel doesn't have the old modules built in.  I try modprobe raw1394 and I get

FATAL: Module raw1394 not found.

EDIT:  As we're speaking, I'm building a custom kernel from git WITH a few lines changed which will (HOPEFULLY) fix this firewire problem with FFADO.  Will report on my findings.

@Intrepid

I have your exact problem verbatim.  firebox, and obviously no built in raw1394 mod in the new kernel.

Re: Presonus FP10 (Firepod)

I can confirm that building your own kernel with the old firewire stack enabled works. I'm running 2.6.32.3-ck with ffado at the moment. Also, by disabling the new firewire stuff you don't have to muck about with blacklisting. I'm getting the occasional xrun but that's another issue. I want to try rt patches but haven't been able to correctly configure a rt kernel so far sad

Re: Presonus FP10 (Firepod)

@jaloz: I'm using blacklisting.  Can you tell me which modules you are using and what audio interface you're using (firepod)?  HWD tells me to use ohci1394 and I'm also using raw1394.  Jack is now giving me a different error.  I'm using the firebox, related, not the same.

Re: Presonus FP10 (Firepod)

@Intrepid: My device is an FP-10 (Firepod) and lsmod|grep 1394 gives me this

raw1394                23053  0
ohci1394               27980  0
ieee1394               71276  2 raw1394,ohci1394

and the firewire section of my kernel config looks like this

# CONFIG_FIREWIRE is not set
CONFIG_IEEE1394=m
CONFIG_IEEE1394_OHCI1394=m
# CONFIG_IEEE1394_PCILYNX is not set
# CONFIG_IEEE1394_SBP2 is not set
# CONFIG_IEEE1394_ETH1394_ROM_ENTRY is not set
# CONFIG_IEEE1394_ETH1394 is not set
CONFIG_IEEE1394_RAWIO=m
# CONFIG_IEEE1394_VIDEO1394 is not set
# CONFIG_IEEE1394_DV1394 is not set
# CONFIG_IEEE1394_VERBOSEDEBUG is not set

Also, jack is 0.116.2-2 and ffado is libffado-svn 1567, built May 30, 2009. I didn't realise my ffado was that old - time for an update probably.

Re: Presonus FP10 (Firepod)

Hate to bump a super old thread, but has there been any progress here? I've been on Win7 for a little while now and I'd really, really like to return to Arch, but I -need- my Firepod to work...

Re: Presonus FP10 (Firepod)

UPDATE: it works. Out of the box. I installed all of the above, opened up qjackctl, started it with the "firewire" input, then went into options and connected to my MIDI in/outputs. Fired up Ardour, complete functionality with my 7-mic drum setup.

Flawless.
