Cannot run off battery power

Just realized (since I'm almost always plugged into AC power) that for some reason I can't run off battery power. My battery is recognized:

brian@brian-laptop:~$ cat /var/log/messages.log | grep BAT0
Nov 29 02:00:27 brian-laptop kernel: ACPI: Battery Slot [BAT0] (battery absent)
Dec 1 22:22:42 brian-laptop kernel: ACPI: Battery Slot [BAT0] (battery absent)
Dec 2 10:31:49 brian-laptop kernel: ACPI: Battery Slot [BAT0] (battery absent)
Dec 2 16:36:46 brian-laptop kernel: ACPI: Battery Slot [BAT0] (battery present)
Dec 2 16:38:21 brian-laptop kernel: ACPI: Battery Slot [BAT0] (battery present)
Dec 2 16:46:23 brian-laptop kernel: ACPI: Battery Slot [BAT0] (battery present)

It's rather annoying, not sure why it won't use it, any ideas?

Kernel version 2.6.31

Re: Cannot run off battery power

What do you mean, "can't run off battery power"?  Does your computer not boot on battery, or is there some other problem?

If I were to unplug the computer (with the battery in right now), it would turn off.

Re: Cannot run off battery power

I've seen this before then.  It's likely a hardware problem with your actual battery.  Try to boot on battery power, and maybe try another OS to be sure, then go get a replacement.

Re: Cannot run off battery power

Same thing happened to me a couple of months ago.  I grabbed a multimeter to be sure the battery was dead and ordered a replacement.  No problems since.

Re: Cannot run off battery power

Go get a new battery then.  And be careful when using AC power -- if your laptop's power demands increase momentarily, it will try to draw current from the batter even on AC power.  If it cant, you may undervolt stuff and it might shut off.
